[OT] Vent!

I finally decided to swap out the glass top electric range I had installed during my remodel four years ago (anyone want an almost-brand-new-top-of-the-line-Frigidaire-glass-top-convection-oven-stainless-steel-range? Cheap!).

So I bought a Dual Fuel Kitchenaid. Today the guys came to run the new gas line. Minimum $$$ included running the line for 10'', but of course they could not get the fitting off at the closest place and had to run it another 10' at $$/per/foot. That also means I have to wait for a county inspection before the range can be installed. But, OK, had to do it, so I told them to go ahead.

%#@*^ fools left the flex line hanging BELOW the joists in the unfinished basement. I discovered that and made them drill holes and run the line through the joist, as any good installer would have done in the first place. They were a little surly.

However, they finished that up, turned the gas back on, the gas water heater started right up...

wait for it....

...but the furnace won't light up! They fiddled with it, still not working. So now I have a furnace repair company going to call "sometime" today, to come out at $78.00/hour plus parts and labor to fix the furnace. :-(

This is getting expensive.

I better LOVE this new range!

Good thing I have a wood burning fireplace in the living room, at least I won't freeze.

Poor Beverly!! I am so sorry that you were so unhappy -- I am loving my new 24" Kenmore with the glass top -- but the dual fuel range is da bomb, from what I understand. No gas to this house - we heat with oil, cook with electricity - but I used to have gas stoves and looooved them. The dual fuel gives you the best of both.

I suspect that your furnace service will find that those dunderheads just turned something off and forgot to turn it back on. Not uncommon. My kitchen counter installers had a trainee with them, and he unplugged the sprinkler timer to use the outlet for their saw. He didn't plug it back in and he was the only one who knew what he'd done. The grass didn't get watered until we discovered it while trying to figure out why the grass wasn't getting watered. My furnace just had its annual servicing and it turned out to be the young man who did it last year. He had not seen the fuse box above the furnace, so he had disconnected the thermostat wires while he did something and forgot to reconnect them. I discovered this when the house got downright chilly and called the company. It took all of three minutes for another man to fix it, and I understand that they razzed this fellow unmercifully about it. This year, he used the fuse box. ;-)

I hope you are warm and comfortable, and that you will absolutely love your new range. I'm sure you will. I am greatly relieved that I love mine, since for some obscure reason, a 24" stove costs more than a standard 30" one does. Fortunately, I caught the best sale price of the year.

Ouch! I'm sorry that this installation isn't going well for you BUT, yes, you will LOVE the new range. I've had a dual fuel range for just under two years now and I am very happy with it.

Any non-standard size always costs a lot more.. This is true of appliances, and things such as doors.. I have a lovely 5 foot wide french door in my dining room (standard is 6 foot wide).. I could have gotten a very nice 6 foot french door with mini blinds in between the panes of glass for much less than I had to pay for this standard thermopane 5 foot door, but it simply would not have fitted correctly in that wall it was going in (retrofit, replacing a window)

They charge you extra because they can.. non-standard sizes do not sell in the vast quantites that the standard size items do, so you simply do not get the price break that goes with volume.

If the gas repair for the water heater turns out to be because of the range installers kack-handedness, can you take the price of the repair off their bill?

Good luck with it!

You're so right! We have an extra wide front door, which has a cut-down bigger door there now, and the original "french" style door is in the garage with broken stiles. *sob* I compromised by adding a cutom-made storm door, which looks like a french door, and has removable glass (one big panel) and mesh for screening. I would still like to have a door like the original, but......

Ooohhhh, now I feel much better...warmer, too! ;-)

Not so much unhappy as ticked off...you'd think installation guys would know better then to leave pipes/wires/etc. hanging below joists in a daylight basement! The furnace deal was just icing on the DANG-IT cake.

That's what I'm hoping. Older DD has a gas stove-top in the home they bought about 15 years ago, and constantly raves about it. She's not fond of the electric wall oven, but only because it's too small for many of the pans she would like to use.

I really think that the electric starter chose just that moment to die. Electricity is getting to the unit, the electronic filter is on, and the thermostat upstairs is "on", but the little clicking spark which should light the gas for the burner is not clicking. DD had to install a new starter several years ago. This is another one of those DAMNIT MOMENTS, why did that jerk have to kill my all-around handyman/lover/companion 5+ years ago!

I am in the habit of watching workmen. Makes some of them uncomfortable, but sheesh, it's MY house, and I want to know what they are doing/have done. In this case, they turned the furnace off at the thermostat, and it just wouldn't turn back on.

Thanks, I am, it's not particularly cold, it's just very windy ATM.

I found that out when I shopped for a replacement for the

27" drop-in which came with this 35-year-old house. A replacement 27" was about 50% more then a 30". That's when I decided to gut the kitchen, get all new cabinets, countertops, lighting, and appliances. Now, here I am four years later, replacing the range... :-[

Beverly, still waiting to hear from the furnace repair folks

Dear Beverly, In the words of my son "what a screw up!" I'm so sorry you are having all these problems. My DH always says that as soon as someone comes to fix something you know it's going to be broken when it's finished. I feel bad for you because I know you really hated to glass top. The dual fuel sounds like the idea way to cook. Gas is much more accurate way to do top of the stove cooking because you have better control of low temp cooking. I can't have gas because we can only get propane and that makes me very ill if I'm in the house with it for more than a few hours.I hope you straighten out your problem quickly. I would insist that the company installing your stove pay for the repairs that need to be done for your heat. They know they did something wrong and should make good on it. Keep us informed as to what's happening. Juno

Indeed! My language was just a tiny bit stronger....

I'm really looking forward to having the infinite control that should be available with the gas cook-top.

Luckily for me, natural gas is already piped to the house, both the furnace and the water heater are gas. I have never used a gas cook top, I resisted for a long time because I was a little intimidated by the thought. However, I finally decided anything would be an improvement over the glass-top, even the 35-year-old coil electric. And I actually thought about having it re-installed....

Well, we'll see. I just hope the furnace guys come soon, I am due this evening to a high school music concert, DGS is a senior this year, so there won't be many more.

Will do, thanks for all the good thoughts.

Thanks, I called the local HFH Saturday. Received a call back Monday, they would be happy to have the stove, but would not use it "in a house". Rather they would sell it in their store to raise funds. That's not a problem, but they do not pick up. I have no way of getting it to them, so I'll call one of the local charities which will pick it up.

My across-the-street neighbor is interested "maybe" in taking it, too, so one way or the other it's outta here.

i'm having my front door rebuilt. it leaks like a seive, and i absolutely refuse to replace an 1815 period entry with a modern abomination that won't fit the opening correctly anyway. so, next summer the door, the sidelights, overhead light, matchstick trims, et al, will all come out, be dismantled, cleaned, refitted, missing trim will be milled to match & the whole kaboodle reassembled, with silicone caulking at the joints. expensive, yes, but it'll fit & it's authentic. stupidest thing i've done with this house was replace the original windows with triple pane 'super efficent' things. i

*hate* them. the only good thing i can say is the tilt clean feature is nice, otherwise they're awful. lee

Indeed it is. I was correct, the electric ignition thingy was cracked, the furnace repairman was just here and replaced it. I now have a toasty warm house.

DH replaced the same item about 3 years after we had a new furnace installed. It lasted about 8 years, so with any luck I'll be moving to a nursing home next time...

Beverly, off to hear DGS's concert

Enjoy. I know you'll enjoy coming home to a warm house.

I'm working on a design for a nursing home. I think on a beach with a large pavillion, lots of lounge chairs that are easy to get in and out of, lots of aides to deliver tall, cool drinks and snacks, and to take the empties away. Whatchathink?
