overlockers

Just asking if others have problems with bottom thread breaking or just not connecting any more.

I am very happy with my overlocker, but frustrated when that thread breaks, even though I go slowly so it doesn't have an excuse to go wrong :-)

The tension seems to be ok. I go along smoothly then it decides not to "form chains".

Any secrets as to how to stop this from happening so frequently. Also why is it the awkward threading one is the one that goes?

Thanks for any help Katherine

Ah, yes... The famous Unthreading Gremlin! ;)

Weird, isn't it, but it happens to us all.

The only cure is to completely unthread the machine and start again from scratch. Some machines are more prone to it than others. My Topyotas (I had two) were a little more prone to it than my Huskylock (which did it occasionally), but the Bernina and the Brother I have now don't seem to have done it at all yet, and I've had them since last summer.

What happens is that the thread breaks and the loose end gets caught in the other threads and carried through, making it look like the machine came unthreaded magically. It usually happens because either the machine was mis-threaded to start with, or you have weak thread. I find woolly nylon and textured bulk poly more prone to this than standard

120's poly or polycore.

Your knives may be getting dull. When this happens it tends to slightly push the material back and deflect the loopers causing thread breakage

It would help to know what model overlocker you have. Yes they are basically the same in terms of what they do but they can be very different in design & 'quirks' due to age (i.e. 15 yrs old vrs brand new) and between manufacturers.

I don't have that problem with mine. Might yours possibly be due for a tune up or cleaning?

Thank you all for the replies.

Could be the cutter is getting blunt. Sometimes it doesn't cut properly (not often), and just hits the fabric without cutting. The fabric then curls in under the stitches.

It is a Janome EzyLock 304D and is getting on a bit in years. Definitely not less than 5 years old - more closer to 10.

Easy enough to test the knives. Take a single strand of thread lay it across the lower knife all the way in as far as it goes. Turn the machine by hand and watch the thread. If it is pushed towards you the knives are dull if it cuts clean they are ok
