Passing the torch

I regret that I failed miserably in sharing my sewing skills with either of my DDs. However, I have learned from my mistakes (I was [and still am] a perfectionist like my mother) and have tried hard to be much more easy-going while teaching my DGD. Her next Highland dance costume will be for the "Jig":

and I have agreed that this will be the next teaching project. She was very receptive when we made her Halloween costume a couple of years ago. She doesn't have to have the jig costume ready until next fall, so we have lots of time over this summer. I don't expect to have surgery until sometime next fall.

Aren't we all too hard on our kids and soft on the grands?

True. We are *responsible* for our children and the way they turn out, we can sit back and take *pleasure* in our grandchildren. ;-)

I think that will be great! I too am passing the torch as we speak. DD wants to learn to sew. Announced this herself a while back. We went to Hancock's this evening (Butterick and McCall's patterns are 88 cents!!) Picked out 3 dress patterns (I about fainted!!! DRESSES!!!!!!!!!! I knew my little girl was in there somewhere. LOL) She asked if sundresses would be a good project to learn sewing. I told her I thought that would be a grand first project. (she's done a little here and there over the years, and can hand stitch wonderfully.) I thought Hancock's closed at 9, but no, they close at 8:00. *sigh* Got our patterns, but didn't have time to look at fabric.

Went to Wal-Mart (ours here in Springdale has a really good fabric dept.) Scored 3 fabrics she liked on the $1 and $2 per yard table. (Could there be better fabric (price wise) for a first project????) We will be starting with

View A. She found a light green cotton floral for the dress and the same print in adarker green for the contrast. Going to alter the bodice so it's not solow cut in front or back. She has brown wedge heels that will look cute with it! She says she wantsto do this Sunday/Monday this weekend. Then she can wear it to school nextweek and shock her friends. lol She wore a skirt a couple weeks ago. Herfavorite teacher said "I didn't think you even owned a skirt!!!" lol She serged the cut edges of her fabric tonight to prep them for washing. She was so proud she had to show her dad. ;) Let's hope she's still this excited next week. Cross your fingers please!!!

I'll post pics when we get done. Sharon

Smart girl. I discovered a few years ago that long and longish dresses were much more comfortable than slacks and jeans. I fought eczema on my shins for over a year, and as a result quit shaving my legs, but I don't really want to show it off or get into braiding and beading. ;-) Pants were ok, if they weren't too tight, but then I made a long split skirt and found it to be ideal - and garnered lots of compliments. From there I went to dresses and haven't looked back.

I have an adult son who can sew on patches, ripped seams and that is about it. Looks like he will, at age 40, remain single. So I have started giving a few private sewing lessons to adult friends in the past 2 years and have taught 6 ladies the basics of sewing. Makes me feel good that I have passed along some of my sewing skills. Barbara in SC

I found that using Nad's (NAYY) to remove my hair knocked back my eczema significantly.

That's interesting. Thanks. If I decide to get fancy, I'll try it. One thing I've noticed about my aging body is that the hair is getting sparse where it used to be thick, and getting thick where it used to be sparse. What's up with that, anyway? :-(

You wouldn't happen to be one of the Chrome Dome crowd, would you, Richard? ;-)
