pattern alteration help needed

I need some advice and know someone here will have the answer.

Most of my shirts sit with a little ridge at the back of the collar. I'm in the process of altering a pattern that I like, and am just too tired to figure where and what I need to alter here. Is it too much fabric in the upper back length? A collar/neckline alteration? A shoulderline problem? I'm on holidays at the moment and would really like to get this right so I can get a few shirts made this week before I go back to work.

I got the rest of the pattern altered yesterday and the toile made - length is good, full bust adjustment done, moved the dart - I have a wearable test piece. Don't you love it when that happens :-) Only problem is this pesky ridge.

Planned on doing some sewing today and then having another look, but spent the day making 4 long sleeved, hooded t shirts for my 2 sons and a towelling bathrobe for me. Now it's too late to concentrate so I'm giving up and going to bed.

Thanks in advance for any help and advice

Dear Chris,

Do you have really square shoulders? If so, the ridge could be strain in the shoulder area. Try releasing the shoulder seams, and re-sewing them with a narrower seam at the end of the shoulder, tapering out to the regular seam at the neckline.

If that doesn't work, how about the neckline in back? It can be shaved wider, 1/8 inch at a time, until the ridge is gone.

I have this problem and I think that I tend to roll my shoulders forward when I am relaxed cause if I stand erect it doesn't do it. My fix is to cut the top of the back shoulder nearly straight across and the top of the front shoulder seam a bit more slanted. half an inch is enough for me, you would have to try it and see.

Well, it was a little bit of this and a little bit of that :-)

I skimmed a little off the back neck and altered the shoulder seam just a little and it's looking good.

thank you for your suggestions
