Pattern suggestions for long-sleeved toddler top?

Hi all,

For some reason it seems to be difficult to find light-weight long-sleeved tops for toddlers. I want some for my little girl, both to keep the sun off and to protect her from mosquitoes, to which she is extremely sensitive. I'd rather they weren't for knits, since (I find) knits tend to cling more to the skin and be warmer than fine woven fabrics.

I've browsed through Burda, Kwik Sew, McCalls and Butterick, but can't see anything that's quite what I'm after (though I may have missed something, it's easy to do). I want it to be very simple, as I don't have a lot of time for sewing with a toddler around! Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks very much, Liz

Did you find any short sleeve tops that would be appropriate? If so, it's fairly easy to lengthen the sleeve to the correct length. If it's a straight sleeve, just draw a longer sleeve lenght. If it's a tapered sleeve, it's a little harder, but not much. You don't want to continue the taper (as doing that would make the wrist far too small to fit over her hand), but I've had good luck extending the sleeve so that the sleeve width at the hem remains the same, but lengthening the sleeve.

Or, if all you found were dresses, it's easy enough to lengthen the bodice a few inches and leave off the skirt if it's a bodice and skirt dress, or cut it shorter if it's all one piece.

Doesn't the Kwik Sew toddler book have a pattern for an top (I've only glanced through it, as I didn't need it when my kids were little).

Is Burda 9627 knits only? I can't tell from the pattern picture, and there's no other info on the site where I found it.

Thanks very much Jenn. I admit I wasn't looking for anything that would require altering - I'll look again. Dress patterns are probably a good idea as I can make her a dress as well.

Burda 9627 is one I looked at: the Burda site says "sweatshirting, jersey". I wonder if it would be possible in a woven fabric - it doesn't really look as though it needs stretch.

I have used the Kwik Sew book, Sewing for toddlers and made many long sleeve shirts from the master pattern and the sewing hints the book gives. I find it a very nice book for simple clothing for children. HTH Juno

Seconded -- I made a cycling jersey out of cheap linen from fabric.com

-- they are having a 60%-off sale on linen at the moment; I'm getting twelve yards of 90" cream linen for Christmas: nine yards for a set of three sheets, one yard for a pair of pillowcases, and two yards for "90-inch linen at 3.18/yd!".

Ever since I made a woven-linen jersey, my cotton-knit jerseys have been gathering dust.

Of course, I've been wearing wool of late.

I fell in love with the chocolate brown cord with orange flowers on, and made a skirt from it. It washes beautifully, I have to say.
