Penny - needle choice for silnylon?

I saw on the Specialty Outdoors web site that you recommend an

80 or 90 needle for sewing silnylon. Before reading that, I would have guessed a 70 Microtex Sharp, since it's such a fine fabric. Just so I understand, how do you decide on which needle for such a fabric? (The engineer in me needs to know these things).

I just got a bunch of sky blue silnylon to make a tarp. Gorgeous colour!

I think the microtex sharps are for microfibers, which is a different kind of fiber than the nylon. See my terms page for the definition. A 70 is too fine, that's what you would be using on something like chiffon. I think a 70 would be incompatible with anything but a regular thread.

other than that it's trial and error, and an understanding of the basic concept of matchin needle size, thread weight and fabric weight.
