Pfaff 1222 tension

i have an old pfaff 1222 machine i have been using for years... i was making an embroidry patch for my daughter's jeans, and now the tension seems to be off. at least, the upper thread is breaking on the 7th or 8th stitch, even though it seems to be moving freely. i don't know what to do about this. any ideas? thanks

Loading thread data ...

Two ideas:

First, take a clean micrifiber lens cloth and floss the tension disks to make sure they are clean.

Then give the machine a new needle And check the thread path for burs...

When did you last have the machine serviced? It might just need a bit of TLC from the OSMG. :)

And check yourself for jackrabbit starts, and not starting with the thread uptake lever fully up.

Is the thread size matched to the needle? Upper tension about 4?

Make sure the needle is in backwards, and you hang on to the threads behind the presser foot while you start.

If it persists, pull the needleplate and clean again, and check the needle plate, sewing hook and presser foot for burrs, too. Rethread from scratch.

Jessie,

Have you totally re-threaded the machine? Is the thread being caught on a slot in the spool? (Coats and Clark has this problem sometimes.) Or wrapped around the thread spindle? You might want to try a different spool of thread, I've had it happen that there was a part of a spool of thread that was sort of compressed (for lack of a better word at the moment) and wasn't feeding freely off the spool. Think of a small dent in the thread on the spool. It was just enough to drive me around the bend for a little while until I found the problem.
