Picking out fabric

I want to make a nice dress for my toddler's birthday. I'm not sew savvy. I get by making simple things like curtains, pillow cases etc. I also made several sleeve less dresses for her. I have a sleeveless dress pattern I used over and over and I'm pretty confident about it.

So far I've sewn the dresses using the remnants and dollar a yard fabrics from walmart. Now I want a pretty fabric and I don't know how to pick it. It has be easy to sew like cotton but it should look nice like the formal wear fabric. I feel dumb even typing this :) It can be expensive fabric because I only need a yard.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

What stores are near you? There's some expensive cottons out there that look very nice. If you find a silk that has the hand (feel) of cotton that might work. You might wash the silk before sewing to see what it is like.

Thanks for your reply. I'm in Texas. I have JoAnn's and Hancock's nearby. If I google, I may find other non-chain stores. I don't want to shop online because I don't know that much about fabrics yet.

Where in TX are you? A new store opened recently in Richardson, Dallas suburb, that has fantastic fabric. In Houston, where I live, I buy fabrics from several sewing machine dealers. It's A Stitch in Humble has many very nice ones and patterns as well. Most of the dealers advertise their fabrics as quilting, but most are great for clothing. I know one sewing machine dealer in Clear Lake that carries nice fabrics, some very colorful for a child's clothing as well as really cute buttons. Nearby is a quilt store with a big variety as well. When I lived in El Paso, I used to go to Las Cruces, there was a fabric store dealer in the mall that I found fabrics suitable for my older DGD, who are in their 20s now. Emily
