I linked the picture to the baby-animals Live-Journal group I am on, and everyone wanted to know more about the colt - he has such interesting coloring. (and fashion sense!)

DD is half owner of the colt's father, who was a World Champion at the

2001 International Buckskin Horse Assn. show. This is a picture from that event (DD is in black):

I think that is just the coolest thing! I had to pass it along to my DMIL who raises horses in Alberta, she is just going to love it! And also it may give her inspiration to help out any babies that come along that need a bit of extra care.

That looks so professional, no doubt people would pay big bucks for that sort of thing. The windbreaker fabric gives it just the right touch!

Your dogs are so gorgeous! I used to have a border collie & samoid cross, she was huge and friendly! This was when I was about 15 or so, and my mom got rid of her because she ruined the tent. She was chained to a big cement block, and the tent was on the other side of the yard, and she just started walking and the block followed. To try to tie a sled dog to a cement block was not exactlly thinking, and of course I was heart broken. Thanks for posting the pics! I might just have to start making stuff for all the animals in my life. I wonder if my cat fefe would like a bonnet? (LOL)

Thanks, Michelle! It was a huge help to me to have the purchased cover to go by...I used it to make a paper pattern, folded horizontal and vertical tucks to make it smaller (just like we do for ourselves!), cut and basted a muslin and tried it on him, and made adjustments. Then I knew exactly how big a piece to quilt for cutting out the coat, and could copy the construction details. I didn't have any adjustable buckles like the bought one, but luckily had a good length of wide black velcro on hand. Living out in the country, one learns to keep some of the basics in stock.

Your DMIL might already know about Suitability patterns...I see there now is one for a fitted foal blanket, and it includes a doggie coat too:

Kathleen: Great vests and handsome 'models!' On a related topic: I want to make a few scarfs for a Black Labrador. I plan to do a sleeve for the collar, and attach a triangle of fun fabric. If any of you have a Labrador, would you tell me please, what is the average neck/collar measurement. I can't ask the owner because this is to be a surprise. TIA, PAT in VA/USa

Hi Pat, Midnight is 19.5" and Jethro is 20". Liz

Mine is 20.5" but she does have a 'thick' neck and is about 10 lbs too heavy at the moment as she hasn't lost her 'winter fat' yet.

Pat, when I make kerchiefs for my dog, and my niece and nephew dogs (yeah, I get emails that read like this: "Anty Shar--run We's all reeelly lyked r preetees. make mur." No one said dogs can type well. It's the thought... lol) Anyway.... I don't make a sleeve to go over the collar because those can wear/rip easy. Also if they have rabies tags, etc that hang down from the collar....well I couldn't figure how to get a sleeve to allow for that. I just make a triangle. The bias side of the triangle is what they tie around their necks. Stretchy that way. :) And a rolled, or narrow hem on the serger works great too.

Sharon, just made a large buttonhole-type thing in the center of the part that is on the bias. Then the tags can all hang down from there. Would that work?

Now, that bears some thinking on. ;) I bet it would. May play with that the next time I make some. Thanks!

Still waiting to be planted. DH says can't plant anything till we figure out where we are going to put raised beds for the garden (which we aren't doing this year.) I may get some more terra cotta pots and put them in there. I did that for herbs on the back patio. Found a place here were I can get knee high pots for $4! They are seconds, so some of them have chips or the coloring is not perfect. But for $4 for a pot that would cost me $30 at the garden center???? I can deal with minor imperfections. lol Got smaller ones that are about 10" high for $.96 each. ;) Put salad greens in those since that doesn't need as much root space. Trying to figure out where I can put more of them. LOL

I think we are going to do French doors in the living room and a deck this summer. I will try to take pictures as we go along and post them. Sounds like it will be a major adventure!!!

Sharon, you can put them in pots, but they should be planted right about now probably, since you're so much further south than we are. They are biennials, though, so they won't bloom until next spring, or possibly at the end of summer. And then, the magic of these flowers, they will reseed and gift you with new little plants, year after year, if you allow them to. Truly "forget me not"! Once you see that heavenly cloud of blue, you will want them to reseed, and to keep coming back. They are spectacular en masse. Add some red tulips and it's literally breathtaking.

My garden does not have as many this year as in years past, since I was ruthless about getting the babies out of the garden--which they were completely taking over. But the best thing is that they are finally taking hold in the rock garden area, which is where I wanted them all along. :)

So true! I'm *still* getting blooms each year from the plants we put in for DD's garden wedding in 1983! They wander about the yard sighing, "Here comes the bride...". ;-)
