Hey all,

Just put up some pictures of "Cleopatra." :) She's the, well when I was in high school, she'd have been called a drum majorette. Now, they call them Field Commander. :) This will be her uniform for the marching band competition season. So she will be wearing this thing every Saturday, all day, from now till the end of October. Good thing she was thrilled with it!! :)

Some interesting construction notes:

The "ribbons" that are hanging from her dress in front and back, are actually strips of organza that I did a rolled edge on my serger. You can see them pretty well in the close up picture that shows the beading. The only purchased ribbon trim is the gold with black dots. The red and the sheer gold (you can see the white edges) are the organza. She knew I was going to do that with the red organza. I told her I would use whatever scraps of other stuff I could. The sheer gold is scrap from her cape. :) When she came to get it today, she didn't remember that. She said "where did this gold ribbon come from???" lol

The hat was interesting too. The gold lame across the forehead is actually a separate hat from the rest of the "crown." I used the sun hat pattern in my Wild Ginger Wild Things freebie to make that part. :) It's just the sun hat without the brim. The rest of the hat I had to draft to her head. Was interesting. Opened my Time magazine from 2 or 3 weeks ago and right in the front was an ad for the special on Queen Nefertiti on Discovery Channel!! How's that for kismet? One page has a picture of the bust of Nefertiti. On the opposite page is a profile shot of the actress (I'm assuming) they used to portray Nefertiti in the show. Cool huh? So I had basically two views of the headdress she wanted. :) The trims I used on the hat were all purchased. I used a sheer black organza ribbon with gold edges (this was what gave me the idea to use the other organzas like I did!) Over the top of that is a burgundy gimp trim that I had leftover from some other project a long time back. It is the exact color of the red/gold organza, but a few shades darker. Then the gold sequin things over that.

The beads are mostly all big chunky glass beads. No two of them were exactly alike. We thought they were just perfect for this. Oh, there are some dangly crystal beads on the petals of the lotus flower on her cape's top. Those were also from my stash, and leftovers from another past project!

Did a fair amount of recycling on this one. Does that make the outfit environmentally friendly??? ;)

PS She was so happy with my work on this one, that she's already told me she wants me to make her a Halloween costume. She volunteers to hand out candy at the annual trick or treat party at the zoo, so wants a spiffy costume for that! Her mother (who does sew, but she said "not enough to take on this!") was also thrilled with the costume. The mother was really tickled that I typed and gave her care instructions for the whole thing. :)

Speaking as a long-time marching bandie from the pre-drum & bugle corps days...that is some wild outfit. And it's a good thing she doesn't play sousaphone. Is the group the Marching Egyptians, or what? (Now doesn't that conjer up a curious marching style image??)
