Presser Foot Control

I have only seen a few machines but all were plagued with the same quirk, viz., the presser foot has to be held up with one hand to keep it in the highest position. This is most inconvenient when working with heavy fabric and particularly so for a right handed person.

Are all machines like this and if so, why?

The mechanism that holds the presser foot up has a detent or notch in it. As you lift the lever to raise the foot a roller mechanism rolls over a high spot in the detent and then drops into a cutout area. This then holds the foot up. If it were not this way the lever mechanism would have nothing to "lock" the foot in the up position.

Since this may not be too clear, you may be able to remove a cover plate and see what I am trying to describe, then it will all come clear.
