Project Runway

Does anyone watch this reality show on Bravo?

It's a competitition among a dozen or so up-and-coming designers. They work from Parsons School of Design in New York. Right now, they are at Parsons in Paris. Each week, they are given a challenge to design and sew something either from a specified choice of materials such as:

the fabrics and decor from their room (bedding, rugs, upholstery, drapes and all decorations) or any natural materials from a flower shop like petals, leaves, grasses, etc. or recycled materials such as paper, plastic etc. all gathered in a recycling plant or vintage garments

They also may be asked to design for a specific person or purpose such as:

a competition gown for Miss USA or a skating costume for an Olympic skater or for each other or surprise visitors from each of their families or a famous person.

The judges are fashion designers, critics, models and various surprise judges.

Each competing designer has a live model who shows their design in a runway walk. After the garment is shown, the judges eliminate one contestant.

What I love about the show is watching these designers quickly formulate an idea, purchase fabrics and then use various techniques of creating patterns and fitting a dressform with the work-in-progress. Each designer has a unique point of view, some funky, some elegant, some odd, some traditional but all inspiring.

If you haven't seen this show or thought it was something else because the name doesn't really reveal what the show is about, take a look. They are in the third or fourth season currently. The final three designers get a few months to then create a collection to show in New York at "fashion week", an apprenticeship with a name design house and $100K to launch their career. I haven't always agreed on the choice of winners, but really good designers get great exposure for their name and talent during the course of the show.

I've seen it once or twice and cannot get into it at all. I know they're working on all sorts of fabrics and designs, but the stuff comes out looking like thrift store finds. It's just not my cup of tea.

Some of them really do. And the judge's comments on those are amusing. But some of these people are truly talented, at least from my point of view which is awe for everyone who does it that much better than I.

...and some are real dipshits. What about that arrogant guy who had the pattern books in his closet? Or that Angela, good grief they need to vote her off the island right now...

No cable here.... :(

We may have discussed this before, if we have I apologize. But have you thought of a satellite dish?? I like it m-u-c-h better than when I had cable and I've been using it since January 2001. Prices for satellite are comparable to cable, actually a little better in my area. There's a lot of channels that come in the standard package that I care nothing for so it's easy to block those.

Yes, I watch it on a regular basis. And I really hate it when someone with an attitude like Jeffrey's or Santino's wins out. Yes, Angela didn't really live up to the ideal of the show in her fashions but she didn't do anything like J was thinking she was. Stretching beyond yourself to meet the objectives of the show's creators to see if you've got the stuff to really meet the trials of being a name designer. But an attitude like J's, or should I say paranoia or both, no matter how good a designer he may be will get him absolutely nowhere in real life.

One of the posts on this topic the writer seems to indicate that they get one challenge per week. That is only what we see. From what I've put together the day after one challenge is finished the next is begun. This is not only more realistic of day to day life but also fits the taping of the show into the tiny time alotment the school allows when it doesn't have classes in session. That's IMHO.

Now I really am going to bed before it's time to wake up. That is if I can get hubby off the couch and moving upstairs. AK in PA

I really LOVE this program and even watch the reruns. It's always amazing what these designers come up with. Some understand drape and fabric in one challenge and completely miss it in another. Angela finally got the boot. She's one I loved and hated--some of her designs were awesome, but this last one just didn't work. The judges' comments are "interesting." They all look for different things and when something wins the challenge, it got to be good!

I'm with ya!!! She got voted off this last week, BTW. And I was glad to see the guy with the pattern books GO! The guy with the tattoos up his neck gets on my nerves. He's just so nasty all the time and I've yet to like any of his designs.

What do you think of Uli's fearless use of color and pattern?

I think Laura is my overall favorite. Her use of color is the exact opposite of Uli but her tailored designs are nice sans the fur.

I think Michael has a good chance of winning. He seems to understand fit as well as style and construction. He makes women look good.

The problem is that we cannot get reliable satellite broadband so we have DSL now. Satellite TV isn't all that hot here either.... topography problems.

It never looks like it should work, but somehow she makes it work. lol I especially liked the challenge when they had to make for each others' mothers or sisters. She did a gorgeous job with that one. But I didn't really like the dress she made for herself this past week. IMHO, it was too much going on. She's a very small boned woman and that dress was just too much. My DMIL would say the dress was wearing her instead of her wearing the dress.

She does do a beautiful job of tailoring. Her things are always impecably (sp? that doesn't look right....) made. I would love to see her step outside her well tailored box though. I'd like to see her do something softer. But I absolutely cannot fault her construction methods one iota. You can tell from looking at her work that she is very much a perfectionist.

I completely agree with you. His work really shows an appreciation for the female form, on top of making them look good. I wasn't wild about the shirt he made himself this last time, and the strappy things on his pants were not to my taste. However, I think for the challenge they were given it was great. And Very, very well made. He looked good in it even if it wasn't my taste. lol

I was sorry to see Robert go though. I liked him. I thought he did a good job of listening to his client the challenge he got voted off. I know there was more to the challenge, but he did make something that his model loved. And for those of us who have done custom sewing, sometimes that't the most important part.

His model was a large size and I think he did a great job with that obstacle. Small sizes have fewer boundaries. Did you notice that the models were selected by size right down the line?

I think Vincent's pants looked great (how smart to use his own pants as a template - I thought he might get busted for that) and Kayne's body looked great in his outfit (he's a cute chubbykin). If he would have left off the patterned fabric and the tiara belt buckle, the judges may have loved it. But that's his design style; pageant queen.

Topography and weather affect satellites. I feel lucky - we have 360 days of sunshine here, but my friend in Oregon has interference from rain and snow that affects her satellite reception.

I do love the satellite for TV, though, since it gets me so many channels our local cable does not.

I noticed this immediately and thought it really must have been embarrassing for the models. IMO, they should have a challenge where everyone has to design for a larger size woman. This is my first season watching, so I don't know if they did that before. I liked Vincent's winning dress, but notice that he designed it for a tall, slim, sophistated-looking woman. What would he have made for a heavy-set gal?

Kayne seems to be a very sweet guy. I loved his "Elvis" outfit. I thought it looked great on him. IMO, he expressed himself and the outfit did travel well. I would love a shirt like that for myself. His Marilyn dress was to die!

Did you miss the smiley? I was teasing, just don't let the winner out of the bag. I knew Angela couldn't last.
