prom dress update

Well, DD's dress is mostly done. I still have the hand work to do, tacking the lining down, etc. And the hem. But since it's a circle skirt, it will have to hang a day or two before I can hem it anyway. Looked lovely on her when I fit it to her a while ago. Very, very grown up. And the style really suits her.

Have to tell you........I did a major boo-boo. I mean a sit down and cry boo-boo. I was serging the skirt seams (skirt isn't lined) and part of the skirt folded over under the seam. Yeah, you know what happened. Cut a triangle out of the skirt. *sigh* About 1" on the longest side.

Did I mention this was the last of this fabric at fabric.com? They even had to send it to me as two pieces. I have maybe 1/4 yard left uncut. Nowhere near enough to cut another panel for the skirt.

So I sat and cried for a few minutes. Then I pulled up my big girl panties and got on with fixing it. I'm using a black satin with silver metallic embroidery. The cut was in an unembroidered patch between two "rows" (the rows sort of meander around) of embroidery. So I looked at it and thought and thought. I figured I needed to patch it. I tried pinning it and if I'd sewn it shut, it would have dramatically changed the way the skirt hangs.

I knew if I used unembroidered satin, it would stand out like a sore thumb. BUT!! The embroidery is raised just a little bit. So if I made the patch out of that, it would be a whole lot less noticeable. I carefully made a patch just big enough. About two flowers (I will post pix after it's hemmed.) I can't even see it till I get really close. DD could only find it because she knew where to look and her nose was 2" from the dress. DH couldn't see it till I held that section of the skirt up and showed him. ;) My neighbor looked at it and couldn't find it. When I pointed it out to her she said "oh well.....yeah that's horrible, Sharon." Then she cackled. ;) So I think it will be fine, but Lordy was that a horrible half hour!!!!!!

Sunday I will measure the little gal for the other dress I'm making. Her dress is much simpler in design. So it will go fast. We're making it more complicated by using different fabrics. Will be really cute on her though!! And it's good it will be quick and easy (please, Lord, please!!) sewing since prom is April 4!!! ;)

So if you don't hear from me for a few days, you will know what's up.

Nice save! Sergers are fabulous tools, but require just that >-< bit of additional caution. I've done similar oops, and one I covered with a pocket (maternity jacket for DSIL), she loved the addition of pockets, she never knew about the error. ;->

Can't wait for pictures!

Beverly, searching around for some dark chocolate for Sharon....

Excellent save, and just what we would expect you to do. BTW, I always keep some semi-sweet baking chocolate in the house for emergencies.

Thank you, Juno. And thank you, Beverly. And thank you, Joanne.

You are all such a treasure!! Thank you all for being my mental backup. ;) It's really fabulous to have such amazing stitchers as yourselves out there knowing I could beat this one. ;) I had to tell DH what y'all said. Told him "this is why I love all my e-sewing pals!!"

Today I will get the handwork done on it.

Oh!! She is wearing 3" heels with the dress. (silver) When she had the whole thing on yesterday for a fitting, she is almost 6' tall in those shoes!!!! She kept gazing down at "my teeny tiny Mommy." Stinker.

As long as she stands up straight! I have a cousin who was 6'2" by the time she was 18. She wore high heels, and always stood straight. She was very hard to overlook, even in a crowd. ;-)

I'm sorry about the error. I've had a few serger mishaps. I find it difficult to make it through a project without any errors. Congratulations on saving it.

You're welcome. ;-)

I soooo understand that remark. I don't know anyone in non-virtual space who *likes* to sew. Older DD *will* sew, but doesn't get any pleasure from it.

I hope she is learning to sew, she'll benefit from having the skill for all those "grown-up" clothes shell have to have in the future.

Your Welcome! Stop giving her all those vitamins My mom used to call me a Rotten Kid when I made remarks about her being

6 inches shorter than me. My 3 girls were all shorter than me. I say were because the youngest one is no my height. All those Compressed discs that come with being wiser and more mature. LOL Juno

And feeding her & letting her wash - both food and water make kids grow. They are NOT like wool which shrinks with hot water, so it doesn't matter what temperature you wash them at!

LOL I have threatened her with a hat made out of bricks before. ;) Figured that might slow her down. I think she's about as tall as she's going to get. She's just over 5'8" in her barefeet. Comes in real handy when we got to the grocery together. Anything on the top shelf, she can get it right down for me. ;)

Good save on the prom dress mishap! I hope your daughter has a wonderful time at her prom.

just a bit of medical trivia - most girls will continue to grow taller for 2 years after starting menustration, then they have pretty much reached their full adult height. Boys on the other hand can continue to grow taller until late teens or even a little longer.

Oh goodness, Sharon, I thought you meant she's tall. 5'8" is about the normal in my family. One DD, DGD, and a sis are all 5'10"-5'11", and all the men are over 6', including the soon-to-be 18 DGS. Emily

LOL At 5'4" I was the tallest woman in my family by several inches (including all my nieces) until DD got this tall. I'm also the tallest woman in DH's family by a good bit.

Now, my brother is over 6'. The guys in my mom's family were all slight. But my paternal uncles and my paternal great-uncles were giants. All of them were Way over 6'. Dad is just under 6'.

Give us another 3 or 4 generations and we'll have someone in the NBA. LOL

The good thing about being low to the ground....we're stealthy. heh heh
