question about skorts

One DD in FL asked last night if I could/would make her a pair, or possible several pair, she likes them for work. She found a couple of pair, made of cotton at Wal-Mart. She would like some of a pants weight fabric for fall, maybe into winter. I looked through so many pattern sites today and didn't find anything that resembled what I remember them to be like, pleated, flared shorts about 1-2 inches above the knees, often worn with a jacket or top of the same fabric. And I don't have a pattern, although she said she could send me a pair to make a pattern if need be. Thanks for your help. Emily

Just a quick reminder that Beverly (BEI Design) was asking about these the other week - OK in respect of a particular pattern her DGD liked (which might not suit your DD's taste's), however, I know there were some useful ideas in that thread.

City shorts of late are mid knee length and very very very skinny.

I'm trying to remember what a "skort" means. Not quite culottes where I was.

Culottes can be sort of neat with a pleat. But from my recollections, that doesn't work for anything longer than mid-knee.

To clarify: that's NYC summer 2006.

It's like a skirt with matching shorts underneath.

The word "skort" is a combo of "sk" for skirt and "ort" for short. clever huh?

Or half a skirt with shorts underneath. The front of the shorts covered with a 'flap' sewn into one side seam of the shorts, and loose on the other side. DGD was wearing one like this in the summer, cute denim with embroidered accents. Thinking to make her some I got a McCall's pattern but found it has the skirt in back, too. I may alter it to just the front.

A little over a decade before that, c 1958-59, skorts were very short pleated skirts with attached bloomers, often with an elastic waistband. They were popular for a short while in all sizes up through misses, but ended up as little girls' wear after a time.

In their catalog, Monkey Wards claimed to have coined the term, although it probably existed before that.

Skorts back then:
