re-intro

Hi, I've been away from the sewing desk for 3 years or so, babysitting a succession of babies. I've missed sewing and sewing people. I haven't done anything but a skirt or two in 3 years.

Just wanted to send a HI to everybody I've missed for so long. Kay L and Kay D. Sharon and several others who've slipped my (very short) memory. I found out a few days ago I've got cancer. They hope an operation is all I'll need. I've got 9 days to finish my sewing and try to get this house in coming home from the hospital order. LOL Kitty

Kitty now is NOT the time to get the house in order! Rally the troops to do that! Family, friends, kids... It's amazing what folk will do when you ask in these special circumstances.

Just take the sewing at a relaxed pace, and do what YOU want to do!

And have some ((((((Kitty hugs)))))) to keep you going!

Kitty, I'm so glad you are back. I wish you well with your upcoming surgery. Take good care of yourself. A bit of indulgence right now is far better medicine than getting the house ready. Keep us posted on your progress and whenever you need a hug or two or a place to vent let us know. Juno, sending a ton of hugs and prayers (((((((((((((((( ))))))))))))))))

(that's really big hugs for you btw.) It's great to hear from you, just wish it were better news. You concentrate on you and getting you well. Do NOT worry about the house. If you need something to focus on to keep your mind off other things, then clean away. But don't stew over it.

I sincerely hope everything goes well and you are back up and around quick as a wink. You know of course, that you will have the good thoughts and prayers from all of us here. We always look after our fellow sewers. ;)

Take care,

Sharon

I have legal custody, but they live with their mom and are cared for while she works by her boyfriend's Mom who lives right there. USUALLY, I get them for a day a week, but I told her to cancel that 'til I begin recuperating. I might want them more when I am not trying to concentrate on getting ready. LOL Kitty

Ooops, Kate, I MEANT Kate. LOL well, part of what I want to do is remove enough clutter so I won't feel hemmed in, and get the sewing table cleared so I can sew both before I go and after I get back. I'm not actually going to wash a floor or window or anything. LOL NO, that is for others to do. I MIGHT declutter the sewing fabric bins but maybe I will leave that for another time. I just want to get going and make something. Kitty

Thanks so much for the hugs and prayers. I knew this was the place for me when I found out about this. Kitty

Thanks Sharon, They tell me since it is major "abdominal surgery" I must expect to be a bit peaked for a couple months but I'm sure I will feel better as time goes on. LOL I'll be sure to not lift anything (except fabric. cause that's what they told me.

I'm so happy to hear from all of you again. Kitty

Yes, I was talking to a lady from Sewing success.com (I think) and she had had cancer twice. She said make a robe if I want but forget the hospital gowns, which I won't want after I get home. Just make the robe, get some slippers, then make a couple of jumpers so my skirts aren't pulling at my stitches. I think that is a great idea, cause for some reason, jumpers seem so feminine to me. So that is what I'm planning right now. Great minds think alike Barbara, thanks. Kitty

Here's a great website that I found after I had a hysterectomy...wish I had found it earlier. Also, concerning special clothing in the hospital or afterward...the incision is along "the bikini line" (as if I'd ever wear a bikini), so it wasn't affected by waistbands, etc. Good luck!

I'll check it out Alice. I think they are planning to look for Aliens. I wish I could watch. I bet they'll take everything out and I'll be totally empty. I'll be lucky if they remember to put back the kidney and bladder let alone the intestines. Think I should ink a note on my stomach? I think I should put a red cutting line around my whole belly. LOL

The incision is going from pelvis to waist or beyond according to the physcian assistant. I'm particularly short in that area, so they might need to go higher.

In 1991 I had cancer of the uterus. Had hysterectomy including lymph nodes and ovaries. Out of bed and walking next day and driving in a month. Don't listen to those who say "you can't do this or that". Do what you feel like doing (no sweeping or mopping.....who wants to do those things anyway?) .....my surgeon came to my room and made me walk up some stairs before I was allowed to go home. I wish you a speedy recovery and good health ahead. Dot in Tennessee

Sounds like what they're wanting to do to me, Even the appendix (in case I have to have radiation, which causes leathery skin and makes it impossible to tell from the outside if your appendix is distended or your abdomen is "hard")

My phys Assistant said the same thing, each person is different. I'll keep it in mind, thanks Dot. your right.

I certainly felt like they'd had a good rummage after I had my appendix out 27 years ago! The scar and the wound were nothing: the bruising from them checking for other nasties took weeks to go away!

Go for cuffing waistbands, as mentioned in my other post. Or cut them from the same stretch fabric as the garment, but 1-2" shorter than your waist. I've found great success recently using cotton & Lycra heavier knits for this. Here are a great pattern for this sort of thing:

Glad you've popped in to let us know how you are, Kitty. Sure wish you were better. I wish you the same wonderful success that three of our friends have experienced this year in fighting cancer. Be sure to put everything else out of your mind except taking care of yourself. Let others know what is needed to put your home in the order you need. It's true that laughter is the best medicine, that and the caring of friends, so came back for chats when you can.

Lots of prayers and cyberhugs, Sharon

I didn't mention this before, but I had the same surgery(incision) many moons ago, Kitty, 1971 in fact. The doctor did lots of roaming around because my appendix had apparently ruptured sometime before then, and there was lots of scar tissue around it that had to be removed. He had suggested I take the entire semester off from teaching, which I did; but I was back subbing at the school within 4 weeks of the surgery. It's true I wore loose elastic-waist pants and/or dresses and at home, I wore, and still wear, loose shift dresses for the most part. I wish you the same success. Emily
