Replacing hook gear Riccar 8400, anyone know how to re-align the gear/bobbin race?

Hi all

Does anyone know the best way of replacing a hook gear on a Riccar 8400 or similar machine. I foolishly removed the old cracked wheel to get a replacement. Having got the replacement hook gear I now realise it's quite tricky to re-synchronise the driveshaft/wheel with the bobbin race. I assume there are timing marks somewhere - anybody know where?

Mum will be best pleased if I can fix this. With the help of the clever people on this group I may even turn around her impression of the internet !! Then again...

Thanks Neil

G'day Neil

While I can't help with that problem, I have fixed my machine this morning. It wouldn't reverse, so I took off all the covers and a metal bar dropped out the bottom, so I figured out how it should work, cleaned off all the old, hardened, yucky grease, then re-greased and re-oiled, plus did a few more adjustments and the machine is like new again.

A site that you might find useful, and one which I would have checked if I got stuck.......www.howstuffworks.com

It's handy for all sorts of things.....hope this helps, and good luck with the brownie points. ;-))

When the needle has risen 2 mm from bottom dead center the point of the hook must be central to the needle and just above the eye.

Thanks for the reply, I've put it back together before I've read you reply though and it seems to work. I will get the machine back and check against your instructions, meanwhile do you know if its possible for the gear to be set wrongly and the machine still work all be it not as well. This is because the machine appears to sew ok but Mum says it sounds different.

Thanks Again

Neil
