replacing slider on a zipper

It's getting colder around here. When DD wanted to wear her jacket first time this season I realized the slider on the zipper is missing. The zipper is such a way that one side goes into the other and the slider goes up and down (hope I'm clear). Now that the slider is missing, is there a way I can just replace the slider? I don't want to replace the whole zipper if I don't have to.

Thanks.

I've seen some zipper repair kits at various fabric stores, depending on what size you need you may be able to find something.

good luck,

You can replace any part of a zipper, if you can get the part. Do you have an old slider, maybe off an old coat. It is sure a lot easier than replacing the entire zipper.

Desperate times call for desperate measures and I've prised open the edges of a zipper slide and fitted it over the teeth, then closed the slide with pliers.......do it VERY gently because slides are often made from an alloy that cracks really easy. Of course, you could do it the correct way and unstitch both ends of the zip and fit the slide, then re-stitch.....depends how desperate you are!!! LOL

Slides can be bought in the haberdashery section where zips are sold by the metre...or check the rag bag, you may be throwing something out that has just the zip you need.

I have tried this before, with no luck. Used forks, pliers and the original slider. If you are able to do it, I want to know the trick. Replacing zippers is so time consuming.

A friend asked me to replace the zippers on two jackets. Ugh, windflap, snaps imbedded in the zipper tape.... I went online and found zipper pulls of the same brand and size, and was able to remove the top-stops, and slide the new pull on, then replace the stops. This might not work for *all* zippers, but it saved my sanity that one time....

Beverly, gooing just a little crazy this AM...

I have been putting off replacing a zipper in a Polartec Windblock coat I made a while back. I shrank out of it and passed it on, but the pal who now wears it has managed to snap off some of the plastic zip feet! I still have a few of those zips, so I'm hoping I can just replace the broken half...

You need to ID the kind of zipper ( every slider is coded, like 5CN) buy a new slider from a supplier, pop the top stop off, put new slider on. All done. Not all sliders fit all zips - there's new and old style, plus different brands. An example is that a 5V and a 5VS are NOT interchangeable.

Not every part on a zipper can be replaced. If the bottom stops on a separating zipper break, it's toast

My site has a whole page on how to fix zippers, plus suppliers on where to get parts. It also has a business link, so get over it.

Penny, including a URL in your .sig is acceptable in this froup (as you know.) And it's not a "spam" if someone else asks a question, and your response specifically addresses that question.

Just my 2¢. ;-)

Beverly, you know that, I know that, and lots of other people also know that, but Penny has gotten some awful flak in the past for psating it, and I bet that's why she said that.

Melinda, I know she knows it, my message was really aimed at those who would use the URL in her .sig (which is addressed in the FAQ) to attempt to justify spamming the froup with

*unsolicited* links to their "sooper-dooper new online bidnez".

I think it's particularly funny when people who have *never before* contributed to, or even participated in, this group find it necessary to defend the occasional spammer. Makes me think of sock puppets....

The real reason I said what I did? Thumbing my nose at those who have nothing better to do than have keyboard diarrhea about spammers, top posting and who has a link to the correct charter. I haven't been here for over a month, and yet it's the same old recycled arguments from the same folks trying to prove they are right and someone else is wrong. Yawn. Sure I hate spammers as much as the next person, and the OP in question was probably inappropriate, but I'd suggest that folks get off their self righteous soap boxes, take a deep breath, and just drop it.
