I've been picking stitches all morning. The men are on the roof taking off
old shingles and the 14 year old daughter of one men is helping pick up
shingles. She came to the door and asked for a drink. While she was having
her drink and some fruit I continued to pick stitches. She had lots of
questions which she finished off by asking if I had time to show her how a
sewing machine works. So oout came Sarah and some fabric and we sat there
for about an hour while she played. The end result is that she wants to make
a Teddy Bear. I told her that she should find a pattern and call me and
we'll work on it together. Fun time.

How neat! I hope you have fun in the future teaching her to sew. Maybe
you can teach her fitting...

Re: Rewarding morning
You know when a young teen asks you to show thsm something it feels really
nice. I'm more then willing to drop something to help out a kid. IF I was in
the middle of something that was critical to someones life that would be
different. This young lady is so direct and so nice you have to be willing
to help. She's not at all jaded. I could adopt her as grandchild # 8

Re: Rewarding morning
JJ you are so right about helping a kid who asks.  I taught my ne ice
(10 yrs old) how to sew this past Spring - she'd been asking me for
months after I'd sent her hand made gifts for the past couple of years.
They live near DC.  So this past Easter when we went for a visit, I
brought her a machine (a good used Singer from the thrift shop that i
had reconditioned), fabric, thread, the works, and by the day we left
she had already sewn two beautiful pillows, complete with ruffles, that
she planned to give to her Godmother for her birthday -- and the
godmother LOVED them (of course)!   I felt like a million bucks after
that!

Re: Rewarding morning
I felt it would be best for her to follow through by going out and looking
in a pattern book with her mom. That way if the interest is really there
she'll carry through. I don't want to push her. I told her I'd give her all
the other supplies she needs so that there isn't a big expense. I have tons
of scraps around.
She'll be coming back tomorrow with her dad and she only lives up the street
so I'm very accessible to her.
I learned along time ago not to push a teenager. Most of them don't like it.

Re: Rewarding morning
My little buddy came down again today and said that her mom said it was okay
if I work with her. That was the one condition I set. Both Mom and Dad have
to approve. At any rate she brought her younger sister nad a friend of her
sisteralong and they asked if I would help them as well. I said yes , of
course. The problelm  the sisters have is that both mom and dad have full
time jobs and mom goes to college as well so a trip to Joann's might be
awhile. I told them I found a freebie on the net and gave it to them along
with some pattern paper to trace them out and then cut them. I think they
really want to do this. they traced and cut out the patterns and I gave them
each a set of directions and put everything in a zip bag and told all three
girls to go home read through the directions and then I went over the
patterns with them real simple, 2 fronts, 1 back and ears. They are coming
back tomorrow to start working. I'm as excited as they are about the
project. I know we'll have a lot of fun.
