Score!

I went to my favorite fabric store (NO, not TSWLTH) hoping to find some genuine Malden Mills Polar Fleece® to make a throw for DGS who is going to Pacific University in the fall. I wanted black 200 weight, which I will edge with red wooly nylon on the serger, then embroidery the school logo in white and red (I have the design all digitized and ready to go). Well, of course there was no Malden on the racks, just a bunch of faux "Polar" "Winter" "Arctic" "No-Pill" (HA!) cheap substitutes.

I finally asked a clerk if they had any genuine Malden fleece, she looked again where I had just looked, nada. So I asked her if they had any backstock. She went off to look, came back with a bolt of Malden 100 weight, not what I wanted. She offered to go back to see if they had any 200 weight. Came back with a full bolt of black 200 weight Malden PolarFleece®! As she rolled it out to cut 2 yards for me, she discovered a minor flaw, so she rolled the entire bolt off and cut from the other end, giving me a generous 1/4 yard allowance because it was "wrinkled". ;-) (That's nice because DGS is tall.)

To top it off I had a "25% Off Your Entire Purchase" coupon so the two (and a quarter) yards of $14.99/yard fleece came to $22.49! What a deal. I also stocked up on 4 spools of navy thread, two sets of buttons, a couple of zippers, two cones of red wooly nylon, plus a piece of poplin to make a repair to a RTW coat. All for under $44.00!

Congratulations, Beverly, on your bargains today and good luck on sewing the blanket. I promised the DGS, who is at George Washington U, that I'd make him one, last year, but someone else gave him a fleece blanket for his October BD, but you just reminded me to check it out; and if not, I have to get it done before he returns in the fall. I'm sending you a private e-mail tonight with a question about your fair city. Emily

Thanks, I have a sweatshirt embroidered with the school logo across the front, I'll start on the throw tomorrow.

I just sent you an e-mail with several of my favorite things to do and see. I hope your DGS has a wonderful time!

I'm feeling pretty frugal! ;-)

Had I been willing to wait, Malden Mills employees have put up a web site for selling direct to the public, and the prices are better than the local fabric store.

But this project has to be *done* by Saturday, DGS's combined graduation and birthday party. I just finished serging the edges of the fleece with the red wooly nylon. I had intended to use the Huskylock 936, because it has differential feed. However, when I conducted tests it consistently missed picking up one of the looper threads about every six inches. Ugh! New needle and verifying that the threading was correct didn't fix it.

So I threaded up my trusty old Bernette and it handled it just fine. I just tossed the hemmed throw in the dryer to fluff a bit, and remove the "wrinkles" ;-) As soon as it's done I'm going to embroider the school logo and DGS's name and class year.

Hey, I didn't put up enough for a comfortable retirement by being careless with my money! ;-) DD was rolling her eyes at me the other day for some silly ingrained habit of thrift. But, she is pretty careful with her spending too, so my lessons must have got through.

Not bad for something I *had* to have right now. If I could have waited I'd have done better. The Malden fleece I bought at denverfabrics.com last year when they changed owners was around $6.00/yard IIRC. But they no longer carry Malden. Fortunately I bought two nice lengths, red and purple.
