Self Healing Cutting Board Smells

My wife just purchased a green self healing cutting board ... It has a strong obnoxious petroleum odor. Anyone know how to eliminate the odor without ruinning the cutting board?

Funny ..... my husband has the same question about my Olfa cutting board that I got for Christmas! I'll be sure and share these responses with him!

Hi.

I don't remember either of my 2 Olfa green cutting boards having a petroleum smell.

I guess it's the same thing as when you buy new wall-to-wall carpeting or a new car. The smell eventually goes away. You can use Febreze of Lysol in the room but that only deadens your nose for a while. It doesn't get rid of the odour and we all have enough chemicals in our day to day lives without adding more. I wouldn't spray or treat the board in any way, as it may alter the plastic's structure and ruin the board. Your best bet would be to hang it up in a well vented room for a while, I guess.

It goes away. Trust me. It drove me crazy for a week because apparently I was the only one in my family that could smell it. Every time I walked into my sewing room, I gagged. I sprayed it with Fabreze, I washed it repeatedy. I emailed Olfay and they were baffled. It finally just went away. It was one of the larger mats. I couldn't understand why the whole fabric store didn't smell this bad since they had so many of them. Must be something about the newness of some of the mats because I have noticed no detectible odor from any of the rest of them.

Anyway, don't return it and don't set it out in the sun (assuming you remember what SUN looks like). It'll get better.

Good wishes

I suggest you contact UK cutting board suppliers, we don't have this problem.

Best wishes

I bought a self-healing, folding mat and at first I couldn't figure out where the smell was coming from. When I realized where, I started placing a piece of cotton muslin inside the mat. The muslin seems to either have absorbed the smell, or dissipated it in some way, although the muslin doesn't seem to smell. The odor has something to do with the self-healing material, I was told. Non-healing mats, such as those made by Sew Easy Products (NAYY) don't smell because they are completely plastic, but then you have to take that little scraper and scrape them off when there are a lot of dings in them.

Mine has been standing on edge behind the piano for several years now, and is as good as ever. This is much safer than trying to keep it horizontal. Vinyl music records were also stored on edge to prevent warping.

If it stank, I would keep it in the garage behind a tool cabinet. Then anyone who noticed a petroleum smell would think he was on the track of the car.
