Semi-New to sewing

42 years old and I am just now getting around to learning to sew. My grandmother gave me a few lessons when I was about 13 but thats about all I know. Can do a very basic hem.

Saw a Euro-pro 375 sewing machine (no manual if anyone knows where I can get one I'd be eternally grateful) at a yardsale and figured I'd give it a try. Bought hubby a new pair of jeans and hemmed them myself. WooHoo!!!

Any tips for beginners? Any websites I can refer to? I'd like to learn how to make a few simple clothes for my 3 year old granddaughter for a start. I don't know anyone to teach me to sew so I am learning this on my own.

Lenora, Congratulations on starting up a new hobby! I never took any sewing classes in High School and decided 2 1/2 years ago to start it up. Since I started, I have acquired both a good sewing machine and serger. I have done knits, cottons, denim, fleece, satin (just 4 mos ago) and just finished my first swimming suit today. This group is a wonderful resource for ANY type of question. I read more of it than respond because I know nothing in comparison to the talented seamstresses who dwell in this group.

My suggestion is to visit your local library and read everything you can on sewing. I also checked out all of the video tapes that I could from the library. I have asked many questions here and have had them answered. Thanks to Kate, I was able to finish the satin dress. I had never worked with this kind of fabric and it intimidated me to no end. She did a wonderful job of explaining things to me. ( Thanks again Kate).

As a brand new sewer, I found the Sewing for Dummies book very helpful. Also things like Kwik-Sew Learn-to-Sew patterns too.

Congratulations! It's never too late to start learning.

If you can find the Kwik-Sew Toddler or Kids book, depending on what size range she is in (check

and see if they have it), those two books have very simple patterns with directions on how to do color blocking. Sounds like it is exactly what you need.

Where are you from? Maybe someone can suggest where to learn. Also there could be a chapter of the American Sewing Guild nearby. I'm in Springfield, Il Sandy Erickson

The Readers Digest book is the best one.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. I'm from a small town in Ohio but I'll check around for someone to teach sewing. I got a couple of the books and actually made a simple pair of curtains for my daughters bedroom over the weekend. Yeah me!

Hi

Little tip for the bulky seams on jeans. To make them go under the foot easier tenderise them with a hammer. I promise, it works, but walk the seam through the machine by hand.

Best wishes
