serger books?

i have inherited my mom's serger & one of her sewing machines (the other went to my brother's stepdaughter, & i bet i'll be teaching her to sew soon). i'm not sure my dad found the serger's instruction manual yet, as he's sorting through 2 houses worth of 'stuff' accumulated over 55 years of marriage... i haven't had much chance to really look at the machines, because i'm trying to rearrange the house so i have a sewing room, but i was wondering if there are any particularly good books on serging techniques. my istrests are mainly costuming & stuffed animals. i've been sewing for 40+ years but never played with a serger before. what sorts of wonderful things will it do? lee

Sergers are wonderful machines to have and will create wonderful finished edges and seams, like you see on ready to wear garments. They are a wonderful companion to your sewing machine.

What make/model is it? That will help us let you know what it will do :)

Must have books in order of preference:

1) The Ultimate Serger Answer Guide 2) Sewing With Sergers 3) Simply Serge any Fabric

The three books I cut my serger teeth on (serger blades on?) were ABCs of Serging Serge Something Super For Your Kids Ultimate Serger Answer Guide (Chris James' Complete Serger Handbook is also good, but later than when I started.) Some folks also like Sewing With An Overlock, from the Singer series, and Serger Secrets. Nancy Zieman also recently did a "Serge with Confidence" book and a couple of programs in her series -- check Smartflix for serger video rentals, too.

Once you get some confidence in the basics, I also strongly endorse at least looking at any book Anne Van Der Kley's been involved in, like Terrific Techniques, which is actually a CD, or Serging Australia, or Creative Serging.

I bought my first serger in 1990 and enjoyed it so much, I've upgraded twice. They can be a lot of fun to use, actually addictive. The one book I keep next to my serger, along with the manual, is Chris James's THE COMPLETE SERGER HANDBOOK. It is put out by Sterling Publishing Co. out of New York. It's a generic book that covers among other subjects, threads to use, threading different ones, setting tensions, stitches, etc. I also have several other serger books, some with videos and DVDs. I am in no way affiliated with the company, but it just seems the book by James is more comprehensive than others. Emily
