sewing duck (quack quack)

I have a sofa that desperately needs a new slip cover. I'm thinking of sewing my own -- it's a boxy sofa from Ikea, nothing complicated. I guess I'd make it out of canvas or duck. Should a pretty basic sewing machine (Pfaff Hobby) be able to sew canvas? Any tips?

Just ran up some covers for my ironers from duck (quack, quack), on my Pfaff 1209, so think you *should* be ok. You might want to use a new needle and don't forget to run up a practice swatch to test your tension/stitches in case adjustments are required.

If you pre-wash your fabric before sewing, the duck/canvas will not be so stiff, thus slightly easier to work with, but if you have a large enough working surface, there again you should have no problems. Personally prefer to sew on "crisp" canvas so rarely pre-wash, just leave enough fabric to allow for shrinkage.

Best of luck,

You will want a Jeans needle. Remember that duck is pretty close in weight to the denim your jeans are made out of. You should be OK. Remember to trim out any seam allowance that will be more layers than you need. Like if you attach any welting, trim the welting allowance to one layer.

When you do the cushion covers, remember to put the zippers in first. Then construct the rest of the cover.
