sewing for me-a re-evaluation

well... in the midst of trying to sew some for the holidays---ive made some gorgeous snowflakes on teh embroidery machine, am making pj's for DH, DS and DD, as well as some tablerunners for gifts....

i realize i am not nearly as busy as many of you..but with working full time, and having an almost 10 year old and almost two year old, and a hubby who travels...i try!

i know many of you must go through this...how often do you really sew just FOR YOU? for me, i can tell you i have never even embroidered anything on the machine just for me....its always going to family and friends! (there are only two quilts that ive made that live in this house-katie's and nates!!) ive decided that once the christmas rush is past, i am going to start a project JUST FOR ME! this is very very exciting! . i found a pattern at the LQS for a handbag--very simple, using fat quarters. i decided i am going to treat myself to some of that luscious cherrywood hand dyed fabric for it........

now, remember everyone-please nag me and make me do this! betsey "we do not inherit the earth, we caretake it for our children"

I did make a wall hanging for my 'new' spare bedroom. But for the most part, I have been busy sewing for everyone else!=20

One of the items I made was a matching jumper and tote bag for my niece for her birthday. The tote was my first attempt at one, it came out really nice and was fun to make. I'm sure you'll enjoy making yours...especially since it will be for YOU!!

I made myself a summer dress this year. In fact most of my sewing for me is summer dresses, strange when you think how lousy an English summer can be.

Good luck, love. I have scolded, nagged, begged, all to no avail, as it seems I refuse to listen. I put me on the list, but my name never rotates to the top. When you develop a fail-safe method, please let me know. Gee, maybe we should just all sew for each other? Cea ; )

I know the feeling. I have things cut out and waiting, but you know the drill... I end up working on things for my DD and my friends with the projects gathering dust. I try to fit a little sewing in on early Sunday mornings before my girl wakes up, but then I start looking at the laundry and the vacuum (which I left out last week and broke my left pinky toe on). The next thing you know, I'm cleaning and washing and half the day is gone.

After the holidays, maybe I'll get a chance :-)

Betsey, for me, that has varied throughout my life, and depending on the place I was at the time. For many, many years, I did a lot of sewing for others, as gifts, as a way of clothing my children, for favors, and as a business (on and off for 25 years). Now I rarely sew for anyone else, unless I get an inspiration, or they ask me nicely. ;->

I've had my new machine for a year now. I have never made anything for me. Bought material, patterns, etc., but still haven't made anything for just me. Sharon

There you go Beth - sew a pinkie toe protector for yourself!!! My mom broke her pinkie toe twice, tripping on her vacuum (although we suspected it more like a kick) ;>)

Sharon - who has managed to avoid that so far, by leaping like a gazelle OVER the machine I'm trying to ignore.

I have to admit that since I moved with DBF, most of the swing I've done has been for someone else. I don't count the curtins as just for me sewing. After the holidays, I need to finish the quilt for DBF and the curtins and shower curtin for the bathroom, and the baby quilt for his friends, and the curtins for the spare room. Then maybe I'll have time to do something for me.

I try to sew at least 1 thing for me a year. This year, I managed to make myself a pair of flannel pants, but I still haven't gotten DHs or DDs pajamas done yet . Oh, and I made a stockin for myself (and the other 3 in the family).

Next year, I am hoping to make myself a new Renaissance Festival get-up (as well as outfits for DS and DD...DH doesn't dress up), an evening gown, and another pair of pajamas. If I space it out, I won't be cramming everything in the last couple months.

Wow, this is refreshing. And I was feeling guilty because I wanted to make a table runner for my table this Christmas......

The other night I took all the Christmas presents I made for everyone and photographed them. When I was finished, I had five photographs and at least 7 items in each!

Here's a new spin on an old Christmas song (on the same tune as 12 Days of Christmas):

"It's ten days before Christmas and these are the gifts I'll bring: Ten pillows from Aunt Jean's quilt Linda's velvet jewelry rolls Peyton's tic tac toe game Gavin's denim tool belt Six potpourri bags Five embroidered Christmas cards Four embroidered kitchen towels Three sets of mug mats Two quilted placemats and a watercolor picture painted by me."

Kind of loosely put together, but thought you'd like it.
