Sewing! Just a hobby?

D for me, I sew for myself as I cannot get anything to fit me from the shops without alteration and also for pleasure. I have not found many people who sew for a living using domestic sewing machines, they are far too slow. Funnily enough most of the people working in sewing machine shops selling fabric are dressmakers who could not earn enough or found it too isolated, but there are a few people who do alterations and some curtain makers around. A for me. But if I can add a new category, E to decorate my various houses. Recently, in trying to justify my need for new sewing machines, I figure I've made window treatments for 60-65 windows. That doesn't include pillows, bedding, upholstery , tablecloths, shower curtains, etc. I calculated that I saved plenty to qualify for new equipment.

I was startled the first time I heard sewing referred to as a hobby -- it's a household chore, like cooking and tending the vegetable garden. I'll confess that the "making things" part is much more likely to actually get done than the "mending things" part!

I send DH to Big R for his clothing, but I make mine from the skin out. I do buy shoes and some socks. (I *think* I can buy wool socks now; haven't been to the new shoe store yet because it's on the other side of town, and on the road nobody can avoid.) And I buy gloves, but knit mittens.

I have found the most wonderful socks. Very pricy, but seem to be worth it. They're even made in the U.S. - in Vermont. They're called "Darn Tough" and I would have to agree! LOL.

I've shopped around and found them at slightly reduced prices, still an awful lot for socks, but I get so tired of socks going in the rag bag after a month or so. NAYY
