sewing leather

Hello I'm hoping someone can help me. I started to sew a leather bag this evening. Everything was going well until I tried to sew the strap onto the wedge(four layers). The stitches began to skip and I couldn't get it to stitch smoothly. I'm using an Elna 6005 with a walking foot. The tension is set at three, the stitch length is at the longest stitch and the leather is a thin glove leather. It is a new leather needle and I am using Poly thread. Any ideas? I could switch machines I have an old singer treadle, a feather weight and an old Kenmore. Would any of these be better? Thanks for your help Deborah

The treadle would do it for sure, and you couldn't possibly ruin it or put its motor out of timing.

I agree with everything that CEA has said except the thread issue. Always use a Nylon coated thread to sew leather. Poly and the cottons will degrade be cause of the process used to tan the leather and the compounds in the dyes. Especially for a hand bag. Coats Bell 69 is what I use for all the leather I sew. I have used over 400 deer hides and 60 moose this year alone. I found out about this thread at our local Tender Tootsies foot ware factory about 4 years ago and since then have had no poblems with the thread failing. Most of what I sew is regalia for Pow Wow dancers and a few coats and vests for family. I use a Singer treadle for the really thick parts and my Pfaff 7570 for the rest. A Hump Jumper is invaluable but you can substitue a folded up piece of cardboard too. I have even used pieces of the leather to level the presser foot. The only other option if none of this works is to find a tack shop or shoe repair place to do the really heavy sections. I did this recently for a binder that I covered with leather. The tack shop stitched the edges for me through the moose hide and the cardboard of the binder. Charged me $10, and it was perfect.
