Sewing projects on hold

Have just been diagnosed with thyroid cancer so sewing projects will be on hold while I go into hospital to have the thyroid removed - probably in 10 days. I'll know more when I see the specialist at the end of the week. The good news is that I don't have to have chemotherapy but instead will have radioactive iodine. During that period I'll be in isolation so if I have the strength I'll be able to use some of that time sewing.

Have any of you been through this or know anyone who has?

Yes, unfortunately!!! The good news is that you can make a full-recovery but the bad is that it takes a while. Feel free to email me at snipped-for-privacy@yahoooooooooo.coooom (remove the excess letters of course!) or arkiv2001 at the same and I can tell you all about my adventures in thyroid land!!! Maybe some of what I went through can be helpful, I hope.

Viviane, we have several family members who have had their thyroid removed, including one of my younger cousins (she's now 35). They've done well; the drugs they have now are great.

I'll be thinking about you, my dear, and wishing you godspeed for a quick and easy recovery.

I wish you a speedy and complete recovery. A dear niece of mine underwent this surgery recently. She was able to get back to classes in time for finals and is doing well. She is getting a degree next spring in something similar to dress design and textiles, I am unsure of the correct name of the degree. Emily

I have a dear friend who went through surgery and treatment many years ago, and she is fine now. I wish you the very best.

I just remembered that the photo of me at

(scroll half way down thepage) was taken about 2-3 weeks after I drank the radioactive iodine. As you can see, I survived! :-)I didn't have to stay overnight in the hospital since they didn't cutme open and remove any tissue. But, I was told not to hug, hold or evensit next to any children for two weeks afterward because of residualradiation!!!

I had half of my thyroid removed about 14 years ago. I had a 2" x 3" growth in one half, benign for me, so I did not have to have the treatments afterwards. The most fun (and I say fun sarcastically) is the looks you get from people when they notice the scar on your neck. It was worse if they didn't ask what had happened. I could just imagine the thoughts running through their minds. So I would look them in the eye and say "No, I did not try to kill myself. It's from surgery". Most would then ask some questions; some would turn away like they hadn't been staring. Oh well... Happy to say that the scar now just looks like another wrinkle....I mean line....I mean... Oh heck, it looks like a normal neck wrinkle.

Sending well wishes to a speedy recovery.

I had 1/2 my thyroid removed two years ago. Been on the thyroid replacement therapy roller-coster ever since...changing meds again, in fact....

Both of you might consider the alt.support.thyroid group. I've been on that for a while. Lots of good discussions. =20

Best wishes to you both..!

Thanks for the tip - have been looking there since I was diagnosed.

I saw the specialist yesterday and he said that there is an excellent prognosis with this type of cancer and luckily mine has been caught early and the tumours are small. He said that surgery should be in the next few weeks rather than days. This will allow us to have our planned family holiday - winter school holidays are coming up (I'm in Australia!). He said to have the holiday before rather than after surgery as I'll feel pretty awful until I start taking the thyroid medication after the radio active iodine.

I felt calmer after speaking to him but it's going to be a pretty grim few weeks. Still, I know that it could have been worse - yesterday a work colleague found out that the lump on her breast is cancerous so after her surgery she is facing chemo etc.

Thanks to all for your kind words and encouragement.

That gave me a good laugh! I hadn't thought people might think that. My husband is concerned people might think he tried to slit my throat! I think I might be able to use an Australian slang expression - I'm so hungry my stomach thinks my throat's been cut.

Today we set the surgery date for 11 July. Now that it's real it's a bit scary but it has to happen. We're having a holiday for 10 days before that - Queensland resort, then an isolated island then the Gold Coast (like Miami) with a theme park for our daughter to enjoy. Then we'll have a few girls days while my husband is back at work and she wants to make herself something with the sewing machine which will be fun.

Thanks for all your support - much appreciated.

Viviane, enjoy your holiday with your family, and the sewing with your daughter. I remember sewing with my mother years ago; fond memories. And expect to join the millions of cancer survivors (DH and I both in that horde). As to the saying "My stomach thinks my throat's been cut" ... us Texans have been saying that for decades at least; wonder where it originated.

Stay strong and know you have lots of us sewers pulling for you.
