Sewing terms and terminolgy ?

hello, Is there a good book or web site that has a comprehensive guide to the many sewing bits pieces and terms that exists ?

i always find myself just describing something to the fabric store workers... mostly it works but it would be nice to be able to just say i need some ______ and not do the the 5 minute hand jive description.

Example : the name of the little strip of cloth that is used in the seams in t-shirt pockets to re-inforce the seam and sometimes to cover the shirt seams around the back of neck. it usualy looks like cotton and is coarse but very soft ?

and as you all know better than I... ther are lots more terms about...

any help, guidance appreciated. robb

A good book for general sewing terms, and some fabric type definitions is the Reader's Digest Complete Guide to Sewing. It really is a book worth having for anyone who sews. NAYY. ;)

Robb, have you looked in second hand bookshops for the "complete" type sewing books? I have a whole slew of these that are very cheap to buy secondhand (now a bit old hat givent hat most sewers don't want to do traditional sewing) but they give all sorts of useful instructions and terms.

The "Reader's Digest Complete Guide to Sewing" and "The Marshall Cavendish Complete Book of Needlecraft" are 2 that I own and they would have cost me about $2 US to buy. Of those the one I would buy if I could only buy one, is the Reader's Digest book (mine has a dog chewed corner and it came that way but I is still useful). There are many more available and most that I would buy came out in the 70s.

I looked at it and it has a good section on necessities and it even tells you about Cotton Tape (which is what you want): "Cotton Tape is a firmly woven, stable tape used mainkly for staying seams, especially in tailored jackets and coats. It is available in black and white, in widths of 6, 12,

20 and 25 mm."
