Sewing today

Today I'm devoting to sewing! I wanted something special for my 50th(!!!) high school reunion coming up in two weeks. Yesterday I found the most gorgeous silk burn-out velvet, sheer black background, with a silvery-gray-shading-to-black abstract velvet pattern. I'm going to make something like Vogue 2779:

'm planning to wear this top with the palazzo pants I made from the shimmery slinky knit pants this summer, and a V-neck tank top of the same fabric. And I have a pair of jeans to hem for DGD, so Hi Ho, Hi Ho, off to the sewing room I go.

The jeans are hemmed, with a perfectly matched heavy duty thread, and now I'm using my Dremel tool with an oval grinding stone to "distress" the hem. Against my frugal nature, but these are for a 12-year-old newly in Junior High school....

That fabric will look gorgeous in that sort of pattern. Just the right sort of hand/drape to it.

I was out of luck getting the Simplicity pattern yesterday, and the Vogue was too expensive (not on any special sale). I'll use a coupon tomorrow.

BUT... when I delivered the jeans, my DD urged me to take the new tartan home. It's for DGD's new "Nationals costume" which looks like:

I spent a bit of time yesterday "doing the math": 3.5 yards of 54" wool, 36" to be cut off for the "plaid" (scarf) and waistband. Had to decide which end to cut the plaid from, so that I would have the best pieces to match end-to-end for the skirt. Ripped the 36" piece off and squared it (DD and DGD will pull threads for the fringe), ripped the larger piece into two equal 27" pieces, serged the ends and pin basted the first seam allowance.

Did the math on how many and how deep the pleats will be for a 26" waist (the best skirts are pleated not gathered):

26"/.75"=35 pleats. 180"-1.5 for seam allowances, divided by 35 pleats (each .75" on the face) will result in pleats of just over 5" each. I'll have to do a little fiddling with the math, because the skirts are always made with grow room in the waistband, and an unsewn 8" opening on the right side. Finished length will be just at the top of the knee, so I'll have to do a new measurement on DGD, but the hem, using the selvedge edge will be +/- 4.5" deep.

I will start on this after I get the reunion outfit done. ;-)
