She's Baaaaacck!!

Thanks, all my friends here whom have missed me--I have suffered withdrawal pains from not being able to log on and talk sewing with all of you! Not being able to sew is a whole 'nother complaint, but we actually haven't had time for anything, due to the cleanup. We weathered the hurricane pretty well. Went a week without power, but I'm not complaining, as we had no water or tree damage. The power finally came on last night; 1 am, and every light in the house blazed, due to my automatic habit of flipping a switch when I walk into a dark room. Never thought I'd be happy to run the vacuum! Unable to sew or log on, we spent the week cleaning the yard and garden, which were under a three-foot deep debris field of fallen limbs and leaves, so we're both fatigued. Cold showers don't assuage sore muscles. My kids/Gkids are all fine, no storm problems. The generator saw us through, letting us cook meals, and keeping my freezer full of meats, basil pesto, raspberries and strawberries safe from thawing, so I am one happy camper. This city--and state, are in pretty sad shape, with massive trees down everywhere, and much damage where storm surge pushed water up the bay, into inlets, creeks and neighborhoods.. Many folks lost their homes when trees crashed through the roofs. The devastation is mind-boggling. I hope none of our other sew folk lost their homes in this hurricane. Thanks, all of my friends here who were concerned about me. Despite cold showers, ya gave me the warm fuzzies!! Cea

Cea! Wonderful to hear from you again. I was pretty sure you'd be alright, but it is good to know for sure. We've missed you. Actually, I've noticed a sharp decline in the total number of postings in the last week, so I'm sure you weren't the only one missing. Glad you and your property are okay. Welcome back!

Boy, am I glad to see you safe and sound! That was one serious storm! Cold showers you can live with, if you can heat food! I do pity those who lost homes and loved ones, and keep hoping that all the news group folk are all ok.

The only time we had a whole week without power was after a snow storm, when 3 ft of now landed on us in 3 hours. Most of the county ground to a halt, including a railway snow plough that got stuck in a cutting and had to be dug out by hand!

The other thing to look out for is about a million copies of the Swen virus waiting to download to your inbox! I had 3000 after a weekend away!

Yay, Cea! This is the first chance I've had to check the NG today, but I've been watching for you since the storm. So relieved to see you here, safe and sound.

And well fed, it seems! What a smart one you are, to keep your food frozen with a generator. Good job.

Thank goodness you weathered the storm, and came out of it so well, both you and yours.

Cea, so glad you and yours are ok. Sounds terrifying! We got virtually nothing up here.

It's good to see you! I am a little worried about this enthusiasm about the vacuum, though.

So glad you're safe and sound. Your preparations really paid off, too - that generator must've been worth its weight. Ours could barely run a lightbulb!

Wow, Cea, during the (Ohio-caused) event in August most of my area was out for only about 24 hours. A week is unfathomable to me. (Of course September temps were a lot more tolerable, but still...) Lessons Learned for the future: I filled several containers with water and packed the fridge and freezer, both to provide insulation for food and a source of fresh H2O should this ever happen again. And I've started squirreling away a few big bills so I'll have spare cash (no more of this hanging on until the next paycheck which might be on the 24th floor of a downtown skyscraper while the banks are all closed). My camping solar shower bag is in a convenient location rather than packed up in a box on a high shelf. Sewing content: a plug-in power inverter will provide juice from the car. If I was really wanting to, I could have set up the machine outdoors in the shade or in the van. Welcome back!

This is Nature's way of telling you that you need to have at least one treadle and/or handcrank sewing machine in your home at all times. ;-)

I must've missed that the first time around! :) The power inverter works off car battery terminals or a lighter plug. It has two outlets (to run a lamp, too!) and cost about $25 at a Tar-zhay a couple of years ago. I got it to power & charge my laptop and phone. Its best use to date: did a Civil War dance outdoors in a big tent in a park quite some distance from a hook-up. It powered my sound system and cordless mic for at least three hours. (Yeah, we should've gone acoustic for authenticity, but I *like* having vocal cords.) One of the regiment people brought a car battery for this, and it was not a new battery. Yep, you could bring the battery inside. In early August I had every window open, wore a tank dress with a neck cooler, kept the tub partially full of water for several-times-a-day dunks. Outdoors would have been the only option then. )I ended up driving 50 miles to an area on a different grid, with an air conditioned mega grocery (Meijer's). The battery purchases had cleared out their racks, but I was fine with two rechargeable lanterns. For optimal survivorist planning, you could have one extra car battery. Swap with one from a vehicle, and drive around some to recharge it. Guess you could always use the power-free time to do some cutting. I considered it, but would have dripped sweat all over everything.
