Side tracked!

I went into my sewing room this AM to make a pair of dressy navy blue slacks for an upcoming reunion. (55!!! Yikes where does the time go???)

But before any sewing could take place I had some clearing away to do, so I spent an hour folding patterns, picking up pins and generally tidying my space. For about the umpteenth time, I said to myself, "Self, you REALLY *need* to recover that poor 50-year-old sleeve board." And since the new covers I bought on sale at TSWLTH were on hand, I tracked off to the side. The new cover kit came with some nice felted stuff to keep the surface padded, but it was just a smidge short, and I like the ends to be well padded as well. So I cut off a few inches of 1/2" kapok cording, and used spray adhesive to keep it in place while I tightened the new covers. I also like the covers taut all along their length, so I "laced" them on the underside with doubled poly thread pulled tight and fastened. Now my sleeve board looks brand new, and I'm pretty sure it will last another 40 years.

The slacks fabric is rayon-poly-spandex, really dark smooth navy blue, and I pre-washed and dried it weeks ago. I re-drafted my old favorite slacks pattern for my slightly-more-svelte self, and tomorrow I will get them cut out and start sewing.

I'm sure the slacks will be beautiful! Just reading your post reminds me that I "really" need to do some putting up in the sewing room. Just haven't had very much extra time. My son has been having serious eye problems and yesterday was surgery on one eye. DH & I have been driving him ( & wife) to the doctor and hospital ( about 15 miles from my house.) They live 25 Miles below us and are not familiar with the roads. Surgery went great and other eye will be operated on in 2 weeks. Please keep us updated on the slacks. Later, Barbara in SC

I wonder why that sounds so familiar......

Do people who sew ever have tidy sewing rooms?

Best of luck to your son, I hope his surgery is successful.

--------------- I can fill a flat space in a heartbeat. The nice thing about having an actual sewing room is being able to leave the projects out, walk away, and close the door. I get a lot more sewing done than I would if I had to tidy-up every time. I will admit to using a shovel every now and then... C

I do. But I don't have a sewing room. I have half a small sun porch. (I do my cutting on the living room floor or dinning room table, or kitchen counter, depedning on what I need to do, and have to do that when I'm the only one home. And remeber to put the furniture back.) I'm not allowed to have a mess. I leave the current work in progress draped over a shelf thing, but pretyy much everything else is tucked away in a box or plastic container. In some ways, that's nice. All my thread is either on the machine, the thread stand, or in one container. I can easily find the thread I want, or discover I somehow do not have yellow thread. Needles, empty bobbins, spare bobin cases, presser feet, feed dogs, folders, and seam guides go in a plastic box with a bunch of little compartments to keep everything straight. Non seperating zippers and zipper making parts go in similar box, as do buttons. seperatig zippers, of which I have more than I'm likley to use up, go in box, which also has elastic, twill tape, webbing, webbing hardware, and such like. Fabric is in a collection of boxes, some of which are even labeled with contents. Some are even right. The only thing that sits on the machine table are a few commonly used tools: small scissors, a snips, a couple seam rippers, a pin cushion, and a rubber bobin holder. The table drawer has a bigger shears, a couple screw drivers, a couple different seam gauges, a loop turner, a tweezers, and some random junk.

If I had more space, I'd be a whole heck of a lot less organized. I'd love to have space for a proper cutting table!

Lack of free space can certainly explain the need to keep ones stuff ultra tidy but as you mentioned, it can also feel like a real restriction.

Not always true. My sewing space is a mess.

My NEW sewing space gets tidied regularly. With two working in there almost full time, we need to be tidy!

The previous sewing room is currently a dumping ground for costume and kit. Tidy doesn't get better than being able to shut the door on it, and even that is frequently impossible!

Now, I really wish that I had a sewing room of my own. The space in the attic I share with DH who has his office there. I have my computer there, and of course, my part of the room is filled up to the brim with my stash in boxes, my sewing machines, plus stuff from my former place I haven't been able to integrate so far into my part. Actually, I had planned to use the big table I got from the Swedish Furniture Giant (henceforth only called SFG) as a desk for my computer, a cutting table, and a space to put up at least two machines. Hahaha! That was before I joined the sewing classes. The Cosplay nightmare was done in the living room, and I only say that apart from dark red jersey, the dress consisted mainly of pink (and I mean pink!) and white poly satin, so I had to vacuum the place (and that includes the entire ground level) after every sewing session. However, if anybody cares to know: We managed to get the thing done in time, or at least almost. She had to take the train one hour later. I took her to the station and after that, I popped in at the sewing class (I didn't join the current one because it started so early in August). Well, at least there I have enough room to cut out what I need to. But I really, really wish that the Good Fairy would drop us separate work rooms, or at least one bigger one.

U.
