silk dupioni question

I'm making a simple A-line skirt out of silk dupioni (it will be lined),maybe I'm being too sensitive about my girth (especially the rear view),but I was wondering if there is a reason not to cut the fabric so the lines that are obvious are going vertically rather than horizontally as they would be if cut on the lengthwise grain. I don't sew much with this fabric and I don't want to screw it up. TIA Elaine

Dear Elaine,

The warp threads in any fabric are stronger than the weft, or filling threads. That's what makes garments drape nicely. You could experience pulling at the seams if you cut it with the striations going up and down. Just don't make the skirt too short, and the rear view will be fine. But if you do decide to cut the fabric cross grain, please underline the pieces for a crisper look and also strengthening the seams.

I think it would work if you *underline* the dupioni with silk organza (cut on the lengthwise grain) to make it more stable and to be sure the tension on the seams doesn't make the fabric pull out. And be sure it's not cut too snug. ;-)

Thank you both for the info. I knew there was a reason not to try that.
