Singer 2662 help please

My Singer 2662 sewing machine has decided it doesn't want to do zig zag or fancy stitches. It only wants to do straight lines.

Has anyone had that problem with this machine, or other machines for that matter? If so, how was it remedied. I have tried all sorts of searching and oiling and reading the manual more than a few times.

Hope someone out there can help.

Thanks in advance Katherine

you're lucky. at least straight stitching is useful...

my Necchi (30+ years old) broke the plastic gear for stitch changing on the blind hem stitch, so it's stuck as a blind hemmer until i get it to the repair shop (an hour drive). i suspect your Singer may have a similar issue. take it in for service & let them see what they can find. lee

You do not say if the needle is moving left to right and it is just not stitching or if the needle is not moving. If it is moving left to right it may be something as simple as a bent or dull needle or one improperly installed. If the needle has no lateral movement it is best you see the repair center.

sorry Ron, I forgot to mention the needle doesn't move side to side, it wants to stay to the right hand side and stitch straight only.

There is some sort of bind in the mechanism, Best you seek professional help

Ron, sorry don't understand "Bind" is that a locking of some sort?

A friend mentioned the word "Timing" I don't know what that means either - are these two words related in some way?

Thanks for your help Katherine

Yes that is correct. No timing is not related. A lot of people throw the term timing around when they do not understand it.

Actually Ron this was the owner of a sewing shop :-)

She said you must have the timing off, by sewing thick material with the wrong needle :-)

She was pleasant and tried to help though.

Ron, I have the Singer 2662, and have the same problem, except my needle moves right to left easily. It has never worked perfectly, even when new.

I have had this machine since Nov 2006...have made 2 quilts with it. I have tried several times to do a long length of decorative stitching (over a hem, etc.) and it will not go more than 4 or 5 inches without having to turn the knob to straight, then back to decorative. Now, I get skipped stitches on straight (yes, I changed the needle, and it's in correctly). When I turn the knob to zig-zag, the needle moves...but won't sew a lick...well once in awhile it will sew 1/2" of straight stitch when in zig zag.

Could this be a problem with this model?

Gosh, whatever happened to my old Kenmore... sewed for over 20 years! Now wish I hadn't given it to my daughter.

Taria is right - I see the old Kenmores at sales and thrifts all the time; they are usually $10-$20, prices much less than the old Singers! I think folks feel the Singers are better but there are many old Singer models that are terrible. You can't beat the old Kennies. I must have 8 or so in my collection - 4 or so take the cams. Love those little Christmas trees and fish designs!!
