Singer Aethna 2000 with issues

Hi, Wife's old work horse is acting up to a point of no good for any sewing attempt. When I investigated what's going on, I found out that bobbin keeps going out of position in it's housing. Looks like it keeps turning away from original position. Experts on the NG, is this fixable? What could be most likely cause? Is something broke or worn out? I am mechanically inclined. If it is beyond repair, we're in for a new machine. Wife says that's only problem keeping her from using this machine. TIA,

Several things.

  1. Could be as simple as using the wrong bobbin or worn bobbin. Some bobbins that have similar shape may have slightly different widths or diameter ( thus incompatible).

Easy enough to compare all the bobbins you have or used or known to work and see if there are any that are different. And it would not take much difference say 1-2 mm to cause problems. Maybe put some in the bobbin case and see if any wiggle less or more.

  1. Could be an adjustment of the bobbin case or the bobbin case position finger

See this document, it is a parts doc for your machine. It will help a mechanically inclined person see what goes together and how and determine if anything is missing. Page 7 shows good pic of the bobbin case.

Check the needle hole in the needle plate for burrs that are catching the thread.

Sounds like either a broken gear or worn timing belt. Both repairable Easy enough to check. Take the bottom cover off and inspect the gears and belts.

Some ideas...

My Athena had a very worn out bobbin case (it's the horozontal kind, what the bobbin sits in) when I got it, and it wouldn't make a stitch. I found a particularly rough spot that caught the top thread and prevented it from making stitch. Once I replaced it it worked just fine.

You might also have the wrong kind of bobbins. There are two kinds for the wind-in-place models, ones have white circles on them, the other has black circles. Check the manual for the correct type.

Also..the wind in place machines have a little knob to the left of the bobbin area, which, when engaged, pushes the bobbin upward for winding. If this mechanism is bent or broken, it might be keeping the bobbin in the upper position and not letting it drop down for normal sewing.....

You might find the problem if you will just get the manual and turn to the bobbin page. Now look at each small section of the picture and then look at the machine. I one had a Singer, drop in bobbin and a small metal spring to the right of the bobbin kept jumpin out of place. It was a simple matter to use a small stick to push it back in place. This drove me nuts until I figured out just what it was doing! Barbara in FL

Hi, all Thanks. Replacing the bobbin housing assembly fixed the problem.

Congratulations on fixing your wife's machine! This has long been one of my favorite Singers and I'm always glad to hear of someone who is still using theirs.
