I am curious about the 400s.  How did the models in that series differ?
I have owned a 401 for many years and would never part with it.  I did
not know  my 401 was in a series.  Barbara

Re: Singers 400 series
The 401 was top of the series (and most expensive of the lot), with a
built in camstack allowing for many stitch designs.  Then there was the
403, a 'step down' from the 401 (and less expensive) mechanically the
same but no built-in camstack -- so that it needs cams to do any type of
decorative stitch.  The least expensive model was the 404, again similar
mechanically but a straight-stitch only machine.  -Irene
