Skirt patterns and fabrics (New Thread)

Good plan!! :) I think it would be a lovely skirt BTW. I like gored skirts, very feminine, and flattering to almost any body type.

Stay away from dupioni and shantung for this skirt. They would be too crisp and stiff. Although, a nice tailored blouse out of dupioni for the top half would be gorgeous. :) Acid washing will soften it a little and make it machine washable for the rest of its life. I did a blouse just like that for a pal of mine around Christmas time in '06. Looked great.

I think for the skirt it would be Gorgeous to find a print crepe de chine then line it with China silk (habotai.) The only drawback to that is it might be a little clingy. But some anti-static spray will usually take care of that. The drape on that would be sooooooo pretty. Again, I would acid wash (if it's not black; black tends to fade too much) just to soften. That's hot water in the washing machine with 3 cups white vinegar added. In the dryer till bone dry. Some of the China silk I've seen lately is so Crisp that I wouldn't think about using it for a lining or lingerie, etc. without this treatment first. (it's great when it's crisp for lining things like bodices, etc. just not flowing floaty stuff.)

Also, you might keep your eyes peeled for some nice rayon. Like a rayon challis. That can be Lovely to work with too. And the Bemberg rayons, are great for linings. (those can also be acid washed; the result is what my mother would call "wind pudding and air dip." Just really scrumptious feeling--very very close to acid washed China silk.)

If I spot anything that sounds like what you're looking for, I'll email you a link. :)

-----------------------------------------------------------------

I've started a new Thread on this since I lost the other one on my computer. I copied your entire post Sharon for my benefit, Thanks for your input. I've been looking for a print in Crepe de Chine and haven't seen much yet. I'd like to stay with a dark print if possible, I think they are pretty. I have seen a couple of nice ones in rayon on Fashion Fabric Club but never having bought from them I have no clue as to their quality. I'm really looking to look good when we go to dinner with the children. BTW the 2 oldest grandchildren will be there as well. We have a date for June7th so as I said before I have plenty of time to plan and get going on this.I appreciate it that you will also look around for something for me. Juno

would work well too. It drapes very well and is very soft. But it'salso very sheer so keep that in mind when you think about linings. Thereare some gorgeous prints there. I have not ordered from Sawyer Brook before. I have lusted after their fabrics many a time tho, and I've heard good things about them from others. I have ordered from Trim Fabrics and been pleased. They aren't very good on their descriptions though. I used to shop in Baer's brick & mortar store when we lived close to Louisville, KY. LOVE that store. *sigh* And I've ordered from Thai Silks several times. Always been very happy with them. They ship very promptly and I've been thrilled with the quality every time. NAYY.

You know how much I love encouraging my pals to buy fabric. ;)

Their 50/50 poly/rayon gabardine is LUSCIOUS. Drapes well, doesn't wrinkle. I have DOZENS of yards of it that I got for cheap so I will never need to buy more and always have something on hand for quick garment making.

Thanks for the recommendations Sharon and Samantha. I'll take a big look at trim fabrics. Sharon, the Sawyer Brooks are super beautiful. So many choices. I plan to ask my friend to come over this week , if she's free, and measure me for the 6 gore skirt. I think that's my favorite. I can picture it on me and in my mind it looks great. Juno

Then that's definitely the way to go!! :) If I could only find the time to make up all the garments I see in my head.... lol I'm proud of myself because today I cleaned up the sewing room. Got all my threads sorted back out the right way even....each color/type where it belongs rather than under the work table, over on top of the industrial, in the pattern drawer, etc. Long overdue. Now maybe I will WANT to go in my sewing room. ;)

Then I did some pseudo-virtual-shopping with you! Banner day!!!!!!!! ;)

I really like the bolt ends they have. I've gotten some tremendous deals too. Got a bolt end of really, really nice linen once. It was gorgeous stuff. Then a really nice printed "dress fabric" that turned out to be really gorgeous moleskin. Sometimes they tell you exactly what the fabric is, other times it's a bit of a surprise. ;) But it's always lovely stuff. And sooo inexpensive!!

I have bought rayons from them several times recently. Some rayon challis I got last year had a sheen to it, the allegedly same fabric in solid black bought this year at Hancock's was more matt. However, last year I also bought a half dozen one-yard lengths of rayon knits on sale to make summer tops, all of them 95% rayon, 5% Lycra. All very different, but all very nice. Some were stretchier than others, some were very silky, others were more matt surface, one had almost a cottony surface and one was a heavy two-way stretch (I haven't made that into anything yet). What did surprise me was the amount of fabric. Not one piece measured only a yard, all were generously cut. Those which had obviously been bolt ends all just included the extra at no charge, well, one piece in a browns and golds print had enought extra to make a skirt as well. Which I did, and lined it with some plain white rayon which I had on hand and proudly wore the outfit to church the next Sunday.

All of the garments have held up well through summers and frequent washing here in the Sticky South, their rayon challis drapes beautifully, but if I wanted it for a particular occasion I think I would order a swatch first.

OK fabric advisor's,what do you think of these. They're rayon,, not silk, colors I look good in and I think really pretty. I think the strip for the skirt and floral coordinate for the top.

They look very pretty. I am assuming the leaves one is a border print, in which case you would need to cut the top on the cross (which I have done very successfully on several occasions). I do not understand what they mean by saying on the other one that "the stripe is vertical to the salvage"(sic). Do they mean it is parallel, i.e. runs with the length, or do they mean perpendicular, i.e. runs across the width?

Obviously, they might run out before you could order a swatch, but the stuff is cheap enough that if it turns out to be not what you want for this particular outfit it would sit in the stash until you make it into something else - at 60" wide you would only need a couple of yards of each at most.

I have never ordered from Fabrics.com, so cannot comment on their service, I got my last stuff from Fashion Fabrics Club.

Tomorrow I will contact their help line for that information. That's because I have learned not to make assumption but to check it out I do want to get swatches as well so that I can feel it for myself. I've ordered from them many times and have always been happy with the fabric. Thanks for your input. Even if I'm not thrilled with the fabric for the purpose I want it for I do think it will make a pretty skirt and top. Juno

Well I jumped in an ordered it. I had a $5.00 coupon from them so it brought the price down even more. Juno
