slick sorta Hong Kong finish

After doing some Googling on Hong Kong finishing, just to see if I could find pictures to see if what I was actually doing was a HK finish, I ran across this article about underlining a garment and finishing the seams in one procedure. I tried the technique this morning on a wool doll dress I was making and it worked slick as a whistle. I used some batiste I had in my stash as the underlining. Perhaps many of you have been doing this for years and I'll be the only one (aaaaagain *sigh*) who didn't know about this. The finished garment *REALLY* looks nice!!

for passing the tip along Val - that looks very nice, and easy. Easier than doing a proper HK finish - which in my book looks way to much work - which may explain why I've never used it ;-) Along with the fact I have mostly made casual clothes so far ;-) Sarah

That is a great finish, even though I had to read it about 10 times, It is past my bedtime. :~} I have been trying to think of something simple to do for a seam finish. I am in the middle of granddaughters school clothes and the serger has been pitched out the window. owww!

This is not good. You did poke your head out first to make sure there were no passersby right??

Nothing is a bigger PITA than when good sergers go bad. Have some chocolate. And let us know how this finish works for you. I'm trying to figure out something I have in stash that I've been saving to try it too. lol

It was a cheap cheap serger 15 years ago. It never got any better. Just about the time you get the adjustments right the thread would break. And it took anywhere from 45 min to three hours to get that one particular thread threaded the way it was supposed to be. I always had the choice of a really nasty looking seam, or broken threads. I should have replaced it years ago. I feel such a sense of freedom now that it is gone. I may plant flowers around it.

Sounds good to me! ;) But don't give up on sergers: if you cannot run to a lovely new one, keep a weather eye open for something good in the used department.

Val, Thanks for posting about that finish. I've that page and wondered about how it would look. Glad to hear it was so simple and so good. Now i have to get up the courage to give it a try. I get so stuck in the usual sometimes and have to give myself a push to try something different. Juno
