SMoooooooth operator!

Picked up the Bernina serger today - rather unexpectedly! The shop called to say that Bernina had sent them one for me even though I hadn't done the paperwork or paid for it yet! Ha! the money was sitting there in the bank, so we toddles off and fetched it home.

They couldn't do much on the price for me because of the way the contracts work these days, but it's the same price that I have seen all over the net, so that didn't worry me. They did give me 4 cones of Gutterman serger thread as a thank-you for buying two sergers in one month, so I feel cherished. Such a nice shop to deal with! :)

I got it out the box and wiped off some excess oil from the bottom, threaded it up, and tested it... Wheee! Fast and QUIET - especially compared to the Gattling Gun effect of the dying Huskylock! VVEERRYY smooooooth, compared to both it and the Brother! Now, don't get me wrong: the Brother is a neat little machine, and works very well for the price. It's just that the extra £256 for the Bernina SHOWS when you use it! Like the difference between Mazola and Extra Virgin Olive Oil, a Toyota Yarris and a Jag, £3.50 per metre poly crepe back satin and 100% silk duchess satin at more than twice that... Each excellent for the price, but the price makes a huge difference!

I have two dresses cut out and ready to sew: one at least will be done on the Bernina. I may do the other on the Brother just so I can write up a fair report on each. :)

Congratulations, Kate. DS mentioned the other day that I might want to look for a new sewing machine, he had been looking at the Bernina dealer's machine when I stopped by to pick up some thread and a couple designs from OESD. This is the nearest location to our housefor these items, besides the clerks/owners are really nice. Emily

A nice dealer who's also a good sewing machine fixer is soooo important! I'm lucky that there are two within sniffing distance, and both sell fabric. OK, I'm always saying this county is a fabric desert, but it is really - unless you want quilting fabrics and can drive to the back of beyond!

Less vibration really makes a big difference when you are looking intently at what you are serging--- the eyeballs don't have to bounce along with the machine. :) My 800DL is way quieter and smoother than my Evolve-W, though the Evolve can do so much more and does not need to be threaded in order or have the tension adjusted. Certainly no machine has everything. The other thing I appreciate in the Bernina over the Babylock is that the cuttings can glide right down the machine face over the table edge but the left front foot is too far forward on the Evolve to allow that so you have to brush the cuttings off your table. I also like the way I can move the cutter over on the Bernina and see the cutting width so easily. Which one did you get btw, Kate? They are great workhorses as long as you keep them well oiled. Have fun!

The new 1150MDA. No cover stitch, but I get a good version using a double or triple needle in the sewing machine, so I don't see the point in investing the extra money or time for the learning curve. (Note to self: buy new triple needles!)

This comes with a dinky little snippings catcher that I might actually use! It works - unlike the one for the Huskylock that I gave to my sister for her Toyota because the Huskylock wouldn't sit on it properly! I think it was made for the previous (smaller) Huskylocks. That's another good thing about the Bernina: it's smaller than the Huskylock! Takes up less bench space and is easier to move. I need to see about getting a bag for it. I know Bernina do one, and it might be better for it than the generic one I got for the Huskylock because their own one was again made for the smaller machines and at the time I was wanting it, they hadn't caught up with the bigger new ones!

I have both upstairs in the room now, with the Brother on the bench as I needed the free arm yesterday to finish a sleeve I was shortening on my friend's linen dress that I forgot to take pix of! I'll try and get pix next weekend when they come to collect the pooch! (We have borrowed a dog for a week! She gets on well with the moggies)
