snapp press button

I bought a pair of jeans at a give-a-way price last month. I absolutely love them, however the metal snap-press thing doesn't stay closed. My husband says it's because I'm fat - THAT's a lie! Any way we tried to adjust the spring mechanism inside the part of the button that snaps on but no go. I want to take out the whole thing and put in a new snap press or a button. Question: How do I remove this without destroying the surrounding material? (when I say snap press button I mean like that snap button on men's Levi's - I have not idea what it might really be called out there).

Have you tried to gently tap the raised piece (hidden, male) with a hammer? It's the piece that you snap the top button snap onto. That might flatten the piece enough to allow it to be encased more securely by the top snap. Don't bang the raised piece or it will flatten completely rendering it useless! I used to tap infant clothes snap buttons when they popped frequently. A tip I learned from an aunt.

Hi.

The only way I know to remove a snap button is to actually use a drill fitted with a metal bit (as opposed to a wood bit) and drill out the riveted center on both snap parts. This doesn't affect the surrounding material at all. Each of these parts is comprised of 2 parts, one male and one female. The male part has a tube, which goes through a punched out hole in your jeans and through the center of the female part. No snickering; let's be adults here. When assembled, the metal tube is riveted in place by using a very strong press.

A word of caution: drilling out that rivet will produce a lot of heat. It's wise to wet the area before you start and keep your fingers out of there until everything cools down. Once removed, bring your jeans to a shoemaker and have him install a new snap. Those kits you find in fabric stores just won't hold.

Best of luck to you. S. FOREST POLAR BEAR SEWING PATTERNS
