software for patterns and adjustments

Does any one know of any software - either in a machine or just computer related - that might be used for making or adjusting patterns by putting in measurements and out comes the pattern?

What do you think the pros and cons are of the old way vs. the new ways that seem to be developing, i.e. you buy or maybe make a pattern, then adjust it as you look at yourself or the person for whom you're making the garment OR the new where you put the measurements in and out comes the pattern or something?

What about designing a variety of garments with software? Is that possible except for commercial or designer houses?

Lots of questions. B-)

Thanks. And happy sewing.

There are several on the market. I am a happy user of the DressShop Pro product by Livingsoft

people use and are happy with other products. In short,it is a matter of personal preference.

I prefer the new way.

As the power of personal computers increase, the features of the high-end products are finding their way into products for the home or individual sewing enthusiast. However, there will always be some measure of gap between the commercial and the personal products, if only in price.

I am another PatternMasterBoutique enthusiast. I've found it gives an excellent fit, with only minor tweaking, having used it to make garments for both myself and a friend. It doesn't work perfectly - no program can do this - but it is a much better first-time fit than any commercial pattern I've ever used. There are other packages that work better if your body is assymetrical - PMB doesn't allow you to enter measurements for left and right sides.

The Threads review of a number of programs left me very undecided - each program seemed to have its strengths and weaknesses, but it might be worth looking at the article if you often make a particular sort of garment, such as trousers.

Wild Ginger, which makes Pattern Master Boutique, does make a commercial design package, called Cameo (I think) but this is very expensive, understandably, because it's a full CAD package. With PMB you have basic garments, such as skirt, trouser, blouse, jacket, etc, and you can alter these in so many ways that you could probably live several lifetimes and not run out of ideas. And then you can alter them further with the Editor feature. There is also a very handy layout feature, so you can calculate yardage, and easily turn the pieces to recalculate for bias cutting.

I bought a Click and Sew package from

and immediately upgraded to PMB, and got a free trade-in deal. You can also download restricted versions from

to give yourself a taste. I am dead tempted by Pattern Master Curves now...

May I elaborate: Cameo will let you design a style and then print it in multiple sizes -- either in standard size ranges or in a variety of different people's personal dimensions.
