Source needed: diaper fabric

Hello,

I find myself in need of diaper fabric for a relative's baby. Due to complications the baby is going to be born shortly. Ultra-sounds show the baby is about 3 pounds now. The doctors cannot delay birth too much longer. The good news is the tests show the baby is in good health for 30 weeks. I know there are souces out there for diaper cloth but my "Google" search is only turning up locations for buying cloth diapers in standard sizes. I used "diaper cloth" in my search. Should I use another description? The hospital says she can wear clothes after she comes out of the incubator. At this point I'm getting my fabric / pattern sources lined up. Any suggestions? Thanks,

Liz W

Try searching on "birdseye" and "outing flannel"?

place sells flat diapers, so you could probably make two or three preemie diapers from each one:

my DD was born 5 weeks early, I tore all my flat diapers in half and hemmed them. They were in use as diapers for a few months, then graduated to "burp cloths". HTH,

Gohn Brothers has carried birdseye for many years if you can find a recent address for them.

Hi Liz............I am the proud owner of some bolts of white flannel. It is double brushed, and of reasonably good quality. I will tear off however much you want and send it to you for whatever the postage is if you want to use it.

Have you checked out modern day re-usable diapers? They are great, my DD is in them. (Lets not mention the fact my washing machine has just died with a load of nappies half washed in it...... ARGH!)

I don't know whether or not it would be worthwhile making them over buying them - and I know some brands do come in extra small for tiny babies.

There are a few different types of re-usable nappy system, including one where they are just like disposable diapers but made of fabric - very easy to use!

Not sure where you are in the world, but look at these UK sites for information (NAYY, happy customer of Babykind):-

know they are available in America as the wraps I use for DD are American! You can also pick up used and new nappies on Ebay.

for a preemie, it might be better to use regular nightshirtflannel -- which is tomorrow's Deal of the Day.Mom once told how when her second child was born, she put new diaperson the new child -- and quickly learned her error and switched toputting the thick new diapers on the bigger child and the old, thindiapers on the newborn. Thank you all for such good ideas! Is flannel the fabric of choice? My "babies" are 37 and 33. Back then the diapers were made of really nice thick cotton fabric. That's what I was trying to find in my search. After reading your suggestions I think I'll go with buying some full size diapers and then cut them down.

Thanks again.

Robin, Thank you for this wonderful site! It has everything! What are new mom's using for diapers these days, besides disposibles? Is my age showing? I've been looking for heavy cotton fabric & rubber pants. I noticed on this site that snaps or Velcro is used. No more diaper pins? Is one better then the other? Guess you can tell the "children" in my family have all elected to have pets instead of babies.

Thanks again, Liz W

When DGD was born 8 years ago tomorrow, I bought both a pattern and fabric from Nancy's Notions to make hers. Not affiliated with the business, except as a good customer. Emily.

flannel is great, but so is birdseye. the prefolds i used on Boo were layered, so there was a thicker (4 layers, i think) panel for the middle third (lengthwise) & they were sewn in the thirds & serged around the outer edges.

Hope you looked at the websites I posted for you in my previous post - lots of info!

My DD's nappies use either velcro or what is called a "nappi nippa" - this is a 'T' shaped rubber thing with little grippers at each end - hook to nappy left side, right side and centre front - and voila, one comfy baby, no leaks (if you get the tension right!) and no pins stuck into baby!

I use a 2 part shaped system - shaped nappies mainly closed with velcro, and PUL (waterproof polyester stuff - not rubber) over pants.

BUT there are lots of choices - shaped (1 piece or 2 part), pre-folds or original terry sqaures plus waterproof pants

As the mom of a 3 pound baby ... I used soft washcloths. They were the perfect size. The cloth diapers that I bought before she was born were her blankets for the first few months.

Haven't seen diaper pins since working in peds/new born nursery during my nursing training days, back in the mid-1980's (the last big gasp of cloth diapers, most all hospitals now use disposables).

Think pins went out of fashion as cloth diapers started to be redone to compete with disposables, and people looked around for an easier method to get things done. Mind you used to teach new mums and dads how to diaper with cloth, and one has no idea how many were afraid of those pins. Most were afraid they'd hurt baby, others themselves; the end result was usually one sad looking diaper that barely held. *LOL*

Used to keep diaper pins in a bar of Ivory soap, to make the points easier to slide into diapers. Then of course there is the *panic* when one can only find one pin, and assumes baby some how got hold of the other and swallowed it down. After a period of frantic hysterics, pin is found either on the floor or some where in baby's cot/changing table.

I have looked on

and seen lots of geat diaper stuff. Hopefully I spelled that right!

Reading about your relatives baby made me so sad, prayers are on the way to the little one.

When my middle daughter was born ultrasounds said she was just under 5 pounds, and one day later she arrived at 6lbs,10oz. They had me so worried that I had a little baby, and I was two weeks overdue at that. Her weight is small compared to the 10lb babies being born lately, but when I was born it was very average. So ultrasounds are not always right, hopefully the baby is a bit bigger.

I have to chime in on this: my younger DB was born premature and weighed in at about 2lbs 6 oz. The doctor prepared all of us(I was 15) for all sorts of things that might happen. Luckily, none of them did, he is now a retired newspaper man, almost 60 YO in fairly decent health, with a great wife, 2 loving daughters and one precious grand daughter. Emily

I too shop at Nancy's Notions. I love their service! When I searched their website I only pulled up diaper bag information. I'm sure I can call them directly for help. Thank you.

Hello, I am having a problem tracking down "birdseye". My "Google" turns up items from the Birdseye food line, but I will keep at it. Thanks.

I did check the websites you posted Sarah, and thank you. I found so much information! From the website links I was able to find all the sources I need for cloth, and free printable patterns. That's on my agenda for today, to print the patterns. My guess is one printing on a

8 x 10 sheet of paper will be too large for a 3 to 4 pound baby so I'll do some adjusting. My daughter-in-law works in our local hospital. She promised to talk to the nurses in the nursey to get proper sizes. Thanks again.
