stopping the spread of a snag in coat lining

I recently bought a great coat and it has a satin-esque lining (standard smooth, shiny lining). the lining got snagged the other day and put a couple of small cuts in the lining. this is a major bummer because i expect to have the coat for many years to come.

i was wondering how i can prevent the small cuts from growing bigger? is it my imagination or can i use clear nail polish to paint over the cuts to stop them from spreading?

thanks!!!

I would try fusible interfacing on the wrong side first. You can get it in many weights, and in white or black. If you cannot get "inside" the lining, you can cut a smallish piece of fusible, and work it inside through the slit (be sure the fusible side is "up"), then press, using a press cloth to prevent shine. Another way would be to use iron on repair tape, but it's usually much stiffer. You could also sew a small patch over the tears by hand, using a color matched satin.

What Beverly said, and if the tears are in a place that's suitable for a patch pocket (yes, on the lining!) it will save you from having to look at them.
