String Bags

Although not technically a sewing question, I am at my wits end as to where to find or how to make the old fashioned string bags with the handles. They were around in my mother's day but seem to have disappeared. They would be so much more practical as a substitute for the plastic bags than the bulky alternatives being offered now. Thank you for your attention.............

I crocheted myself a bunch of them a few years ago, using regular bedspread cotton. IIRC, I made a single crochet base about 4" x 12", then did a fishnet pattern until they were about a foot high, and added crochet handles. If you are interested, I could dig one out, look at it, and send you more detailed instructions. N.B., Nowadays I generally use canvas shopping bags to take to the grocery store when I know I am going, just keep one or two of the other kind around if I am travelling or not expecting to buy much - those string handles can really cut into your fingers.

String bags are in stores right now; I saw some cute ones at Target just the other day.

If you have some of the natural ones, but want them to be more stylish and colored, the bags are made of cotton, and take dye very well.

I took one of mine to Paris with me, and fit right in with the locals!
