Sturdier bag?

Hey!

I have some really awesome patterned material left over from an old project, and I'd really love to make a bag/purse type deal out of it. The only problem is that it's really flimsy [it's cotton], and I don't really know what to do with it to make it sturdier. Is there something I should line it with, or what? Any suggestions would be helpful.

TIA

I have made a couple of purses using fabric not sturdy enough by itself. I laid the outer fabric over a stronger fabric, cut them and sewed them as one. Thus the inner one takes the weight of the contents and is covered by the pretty one. In one of them, I planned several pockets and sewed them to the inner one before cutting the outer layer, thus creating a super every day purse with pockets for keys, pen, comb, billfold, etc. Everything in its place so I never had to dig!

I made a takeout box purse out of satin by using Wonder-Under to fuse the satin to cotton canvas. It's holding up nicely so far. - scoiveg

Even if you use the fusible fleece, I would suggest adding a lining and quilting all three layers. Also, there is a fusible hair canvas that will give body to the bag. This would not require quilting.
