Surprize

You'll never believe what I just saw! I never thought *I* would see it again. When back when I was just a novice sewer I bought a pattern to make a gown for my then boyfriend's senior prom. I bought some emerald green chiffon, even though I'd never handled it before and some gold and *gemed* trim. This without a thought about how to handle the fabric or do the puffy sleeves. Today I was wandering around and happened on a website for "vintage" patterns. Iwas going to quit when I clicked on one last catagory of patterns and scrolled through when I stumbled on......... you guessed it

.My dress turned out great even though I didn't really know what I was doing. I guess ignorance is bliss. I couldn't psych myself out thinking it was too hard or the fabric needed special handling, etc. I looked like Juliet in emerald green. I still have a picture but I don't know where it is right now.

I believe that there is a sewing guardian angel that protects us all when we do something somewhat crazy... I did something similar many years ago, and it turned out great as well (and had absolutely no business being as nice as it was)..

I did not know anything about making a muslin, or really how to alter to fit etc... *AND* I did not realize that napped fabrics and satins needed special handling, etc... (satin bodice gown with long velvet skirt and matching velvet evening jacket) By rights the gown should have been an absolute horror, but wasn't...

I have this pattern, too. :-) It's very special to me because, a few years ago when I was going through a rough time, an online buddy sent me a snail-mail box of vintage patterns (about 50-60) that included this one and others from the same era. Her gesture was so thoughtful, I just feel like all the patterns are "lucky" or something like that!

That's one pattern I will never forget. A friend of my youngest DD celebrated her quincenera(15th birthday in Mexico) and I made the dresses for the celebration-16 dresses #3 in aqua rayon crepe, with black satin ribbon. After all, it was December and the girl's mother decided on the black, not the gorgeous blue as the girl wanted, which I never understood. The mother was very well pleased with the result and it did look okay, and since she was the paying customer, I didn't say anything. Emily
