tailoring suit books about

Hallo everyone,

I like to improve my sewing, ( my english too, but that's another story) It's a matter of fact I have not enough time to take the lessons. May be a good book will do for me. Please help. I ve got three books of Sandra Betzina and one about tailoring van Pletch but there are not enough pixs about details.

What is your opinion?

The Singer Series is very good, with lots of excellent photos.

The Singer Sewing Library Reference books are very good... I have not seen their tailoring book.

BUT... when I made suits a long long time ago (and actually wore them for work) I got excellent guidence from the Time-Life Sewing Series book on tailoring. It is unfortunately out of print:

Pampeliska could try Amazon for a second-hand copy. I found "Easy Easier Easiest Tailoring" (Palmer and Pletsch) very good. It may be out of print as my copy is now quite old.

One of the best things I ever did was to take an old suit coat of my husband's to pieces to work out how it was constructed.

I never tried to do the buttonholes myself, but took the garment to a professional men's tailor to do!

Daisy.

Don't assume malice for what stupidity can explain.

Here is another thought... there are videos. Here is one that is also available in PAL:

It may be a bit pricey (but the US dollar is falling compared to the Euro). Good luck.

Are you trying for hand tailoring or "speed tailoring" with fusible interfacings? If you're going for the traditional hand tailoring, Cabrera's two books, Classic Tailoring Techniques: A Construction Guide for Men's Wear and Classic Tailoring Techniques: A Construction Guide for Women's Wear are quite good. Both are from Fairchild Press, and not inexpensive.

I've learned most of my speed tailoring from Judy Barlup, especially her video tape and booklets of techniques:

tape is available in both VHS and PAL formats. Kay Lancaster snipped-for-privacy@fern.com
