Taking a bit of time off

I had minor surgery on my left hand today. I bump appeared a couple of months ago on one of the joints in my middle finger, and has recently become inflamed and sore. The doctor diagnosed a "synovial cyst". He gave me a shot of local anesthetic, and used a huge syringe to try to aspirate it. However he punched through the other side, and ended up just using manual pressure to force out the contents of the cyst, then gave me a shot of cortisone to help reduce swelling. So now I'm icing my hand, not getting much done at the moment. He says it may come back...or not... ;-}

Ahhh, lumpy finger syndrome, I know it well. ;-) Hope it heals up fast! Hope the treatment wasn't worse than the condition, too. Rest and relax, put your feet up, watch some old movies or read a novel and eat some bonbons. You've earned it.

Hope everything is ok now! Did the problem develop because of overdoing it? I have an inflamed joint in my left hand middle finger and am *supposed* to be resting it.

Ah, when the spirit is willing but the finger is weak. . . :-(

I think I'll just sneak off with your sewing time while you're not using it... Bit busy round here!

I bet those will be the colours of your hand ... but it sounds pretty dire, I hope you don't need more treatment.

Dear Beverly, Scream, yell, stamp your feet, and then put ice on your hand. Hope you feel better soon. Juno

Ouch - I can relate - I had what the doctors thought to be a ganglion removed last year on the side of my right hand.

Ouch! I ended up at the local day care centre at the local hospital to have my 'ganglion' removed. They put local in my hand - the doc managed to hit a vein and I bled everywhere! The nurse ticked him off good and proper - I mentally swore later when I realised the blood had got on my clothes..... I had a fancy tourniquet, and they opened the hand up and said "oh!" - which is not a good thing really - and went on to say "It's actually a growth madam rather than a ganglion". Luckily, the lab tests came back that it was benign. So my surgery time was extended, and an ouchy hand afterwards for about a week - but no lump! I have a neat one inch scar on my hand and just a tiny bump.

Oooh! Ooh! Does this mean you finally found some / dyed some fabric to the right colour?

Take care of yourself. Don't do anything you don't have to do.

I changed the dressing this morning, ugly looking, swollen, spectacularly bruised, but not draining or anything, so apparently healing. :-) I'll finally catch up on some of the DVDs my DDs have given me. Or finish the Ben Franklin biography I've started and stopped about a dozen times.

As far as I can tell from internet research, synovial cysts develop for no particular reason. It's a slow leak of the lubrication around joints. Not dangerous, but in my case it got progressively more tender.

LOL!

Beverly, finding it hard to type with a big ol' ice pack on my left hand.

Oh, what a good idea! We can start an unused-sewing-time bank. ;-}

The rainbow hues on my hand tend more to purplish-red at the moment. The doctor said this may come back, if it does he'll do another aspiration, and if it comes back a third time he'll excise the darned thing. Or, I could probably just ignore it...

Thanks! I feel fine, I just hate not having two hands to do stuff with. Manipulating a keyboard is about it for now. I went to DGD's "Grandparent's Day" at school this morning. She admired my purple dressing, I admired her bright red hair. The kids were having some sort of "change-my-hair-color-to-something-not-seen-in-nature" event. Really quite cute.

Thanks! But the velvet can't wait too long, DGD is bursting out of the borrowed outfit, so I have to get the new ones made soon. Her next competition (if her foot is well by then) is in early April.

Yikes! :-[

How wonderful that it proved to be benign, that had to be scarry!

Oh, maybe I didn't report here: I was at the Mill End Store several days ago, to buy 10 yards of 1/2" elastic, and took another look at their velvets. They had a brand new roll of deep purple-tending-to-blue 100% cotton velvet. I had a JoAnn's coupon (which the MES honors), so I took a chance and bought enough for the vest, along with a couple of yards of satin for the lining. Took it over for DD's & DGD's approval last weekend. She loved it: "It's perfect, Grandma!", so I'm going to get started as soon as I can manage. :-)

Just take care of the wound. Watching DVDs sounds like an excellent way to relax and rest your hand; and reading about "old" Ben Franklin should be interesting. Emily
