Taking a bit of time off

Sounds like me; if I like a movie, I can see it time and time again; also re-reading favorite books is like putting on an old pair of comfy slippers. Emily

I know the book reviewers should be able to recommend good books that the John Q public will enjoy, reading; but in my case, I often find the book least recommended is the one I enjoy the most and vice versa. The same goes for many movie critics as well. Of course, I am different. Emily

Emily, everybody is different! ;-) We're all individuals and if we think we're not we're kidding ourselves. Nothing wrong with your own taste in books, music, movies, clothing, whatever. The older I get the angrier I become when I see how our modern society is trying to press each and everyone in to this mold that makes us face- and spineless puppets. Some guru in some magazine tells folks a certain book is great and heaven help you if you don't chime in and pronounce this work charming as well. And - call me paranoid if you want to - who guarantees that he (or she) wasn't paid for the excellent review?

Book reviews are a funny business. In Germany, we had a bloke who'd review books on TV regularly (he and three other persons, but he'd do all the talking and in many cases didn't even bother to let the others have their say, and he was really old and loved to hear himself talk, a common thing with people who have outlived their reputation as brilliant minds). He'd just rip a book and in consequence folks would -in his younger days not even bother to look into it -in his old days rush to get it. So Beverly, don't try to be a good consumer and eat all the crap they dish out to you. If you don't like it - think of the Emperor's new clothes... He might be naked indeed. ;-)

You're telling me! I wasn't 100% surprised when they said it was a growth rather than a ganglion as it had always felt very solid to me. But then the cancer implications hit me..... this lump had been with me growing slowly for just over 10 years! I was so relieved when I got the benign verdict - DD was only 16 mths old when I had the lump removed.

Well done on your lucky find - I know you weren't looking forward to having to pick some off the internet or do your home dying experiments. Enjoy making the vest.

Regards,

Sarah

It's the new one. The old one has someone like Merle Oberon or one of her contemporaries as the female lead.

Way before my time! ;-) And there's a newer one yet, I saw this one made in 1999 in Prague when I searched:

Well, it was way before my time, also, but I inherited a love of old movies from my mom.

Well, whaddya know, it WAS Merle Oberon, produced in 1934 (when my mom was 4-5 years old), and Leslie "Ashley Wilkes" Howard as the S.P.

Book reviews are often more about the reviewer than the book being reviewed. If you come across a reviewer with whom you tend to agree, make a note of the name because there may be other books waiting for discovery. But so many reviewers are more valuable as indicators of misdirection - if they like a book, you will hate it; or if they hate a book, you will love it. Plus some have an axe to grind or fish to fry.

It *was* securely attached, or so it seemed to be until it vanished. Left no forwarding address, either. Fickle.

LOL! I would opt for fickle bumps which disappeared spontaneously any day.

I don't usually seek our reviews, and give them only passing notice in the local paper. I don't remember why I thought this book would be good, I think it was something I heard on PBS. Oh, well, I bought it at Costco for about half the list price, so no big loss.

Seems I've had a bunch, and I become curiously fond of them after a while. I have a really peculiar one in my thumb that has been there since high school when another student accidentally stabbed me with his freshly sharpened No. 2 pencil. It started life as a tiny speck and is now about the size of a dime. A round dime with a dome, and black and shiny. But it's harmless.

Beverly, is that the one in which the SP is always saying "Sink me!"? I loved that version!

Karen Maslowski

The very same. ;-) I loved it when I first saw it on PBS many years ago, my kids bought it for me a VHS tape, and more recently gave me the DVD. I could watch it at least one a year.

That guy is so charming, in a goofy way. I went around saying "Sink me" for weeks, until my husband begged me to stop! If only he had done it, instead. Sigh. LOL

Well, thanks for letting me know that it's available on DVD now. That will definitely be on my list of "must haves"!

Karen Maslowski" haves"!

You're welcome. I wish the DVD had some "extras", but it's still very worth having for the improved picture quality.
