Temporarily taking in pajama pants

I am brand new at sewing and as such don't know what I'm doing. My son got a pair of fleece pajama pants for Christmas that he LOVES but they are waaayyy too big. He wore them all day the other day and I had to pin the sides to keep them up and keep re-rolling the bottoms to keep him from walking on them. I think I can handle temporarily hemming the pant legs, but I don't know what to do with the waist. I figure that by next winter he'll be at least a little bigger in the waist, so I will only need to take them in for the next couple of months. Is there anything I can do short of opening up the waistline and shortening elastic?

My daughter is built like a stick insect so all her clothes have to be taken in. For most things that need smaller waists, I do a couple of darts, spread around the waistband. Then when they need to be let out, I can spread that around as well so that the waist band is balanced.
