When I made a single-breasted three-piece suit for my husband I measured: Basic: Chest Waist Hip Side-to-side across his belly

Pants: Length, left waist to floor at side seam (with dress shoes on) Length, right waist to floor at side seam Inseam length Right thigh Left thigh Right knee Left knee

Jacket: Neck Jacket sleeve length from C1 to wrist, left arm Jacket sleeve length from C1 to wrist, right arm Bicep, right Bicep, left Right elbow, flexed Left Elbow, flexed Jacket Back length, C1 to waist Jacket Back length, C1 to bottom of jacket Jacket Front length, neck to waist Jacket Front length, neck to bottom of jacket Tip of left shoulder to CF waist Tip of right shoulder to CF waist Width of back, side to side 5" below the neck

Then we decided where he wanted the first (top) front button on a two-button jacket, how wide he wanted the lapels, whether a notch or v-shaped collar notch, how many and where the inside jacket pockets would go, how many sleeve vent buttons, how many back vents on the jacket.

Pleated or flat front pants, the shape of the pants front and back pockets, which side would have an inside-the-pocket coin pocket, buttons or no on the back pockets, type of lining for the inner thigh area, button or hook (or both) for the waistband, where to place the suspender buttons, and whether to add belt loops. Also decided on that little "dress on which side" issue.

For the vest, front length, back length, depth of armscye, real welt pockets so he could use his grandfather's pocket watch, how many buttons up the front, the type of buckle for the back waist, black or red paisley for the back and lining.

There were probably more I have forgotten. I realize many of these items are not strictly speaking "measurements," but all were important decisions in making his suit exactly as he wanted.
